Sharks gamble on Jordaan at 12

Pat Lambie and Paul Jordaan will both start for the Sharks in the Super Rugby final this weekend, with John Plumtree opting to give the latter a first-ever senior start in the number 12 jersey

Bismarck du Plessis will lead an unchanged pack onto the field as he celebrates the remarkable feat of 100 Super Rugby caps; he is joined by six other test Springboks in a strong starting pack, where only Anton Bresler is uncapped at international level.

It’s at the back that two changes have been made to the side that prevailed at Newlands last week; Jordaan comes in for the injured Tim Whitehead in a straight swap, meaning JP Pietersen and Louis Ludik are again in the relatively unfamiliar 13 and 14 jersey respectively. Lambie has been named to start at fullback, with Riaan Viljoen dropping to the wood this week.

The same 5-2 split has been retained on the bench as well, with Viljoen in for Odwa Ndungane in the only change to the reserve division that did battle last week. Jean Deysel and Jacques Botes will both have a huge role to play in the latter stages of the game, one feels.

The Sharks

1. Tendai Mtawarira
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Willem Alberts
5. Anton Bresler
6. Keegan Daniel ( C )
7. Marcell Coetzee
8. Ryan Kankowski
9. Charl McLeod
10. Frederic Michalak
11. Lwazi Mvovo
12. Paul Jordaan
13. JP Pietersen
14. Louis Ludik
15. Patrick Lambie

16. Craig Burden
17. Wiehahn Herbst
18. Steven Sykes
19. Jacques Botes
20. Jean Deysel
21. Meyer Bosman
22. Riaan Viljoen

  • I would normally have blasted Plum for being really dumb with the Jordaan and Lambie positions, but after Saturday’s surprisingly stupid selections actually working out, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

  • So here’s what I wrote on this centre combo a few days ago (since someone is bound to ask)

    Option 5: Jordaan-Pietersen
For: If his twitter handle is anything to go by, Paul Jordaan actually views himself first and foremost as an inside centre and it was as an inside back that this creative genius first shone on the junior rugby stage. If he can adapt to the position quickly enough, he could create a lot of space for Pietersen and the other dangerous finishers outside him.

Against: We haven’t seen Jordaan at 12 for a long time and certainly never in a senior game. Will he be up to the Sonny Bill challenge defensively? Again, this combination involved picking two players outside of their more regular positions; there’s a strong school of thought arguing that Jordaan is a ready-made 13 and possibly the best we have in that position. Why then pick him out of position, rather than solving the real problem at 12?

  • i would prefer mvovo/lambie/jordaan/jp/ludik – but we know now that jp can play 13, ludik 1ing and lambie 15, so not too phased out  haven’t seen jordaan at 12 though.

  • So not what I would have done… But then again, I was pulling the hair out of my head when I saw the run on team last week, and we all know how that worked out…

My biggest concern is JP’s defensive alignment against a team with Sonny-Bill “I can do more than offload” Williams in it.

I think Plum himself is still struggling to figure himself out, it’s an impossible task.

With him as coach, when we’re supposed to win we lose, when we’re supposed to lose we win – maybe he’s trying tho give the Chiefs a fighting chance, adding to our underdog status?

Making 1st time tackles will bring the entire Chiefs game plan to a halt as they rely on their players breaking tackles in 1 on 1 situations and getting into space to offload.

Gotta trust the boys on this one – the centre injuries mean there is no tried and trusted alternative available.

I remember feeling like this on two occasions, the week preceding the 2010 Currie Cup final, even comments from WP supporters didn’t get me up tight, as well as just a few weeks ago when we were facing the Reds. I think we will cause the biggest upset in Super Rugby :)

Rather select a team that can outscore the Chiefs on the day and if that’s the answer then this is the team to do it.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 104) : I don’t know if this is a common problem, but I get the feelings that the schools in KZN, in particular, seem to think that the Sharks are going to knock on each of their doors individually and BEG them to co-operate. As long as that doesn’t happen, they go out of their way to make life difficult by, for example, scheduling school rugby matches to clash with Sharks games.

  • This team by Plum is made for running rugby, I think the aim is to shoot out of the gates, rack up a 14+ point lead and in the second half once the lads tire a bit to send up replacements meant to help defending

  • @robdylan (Comment 106) : You know that is a gripe I have had this year! Despite Megatron’s sarcastic remarks, this scheduling of games is a real problem! I have missed quite a few games because of it, and so have many other parents. I understand this game was scheduled last year and they couldn’t have known that we would be in the finals in NZ, but in general its really poor planning communication between schools and Sharks! SR schedules are out a year ahead use those and ensure that games are finished on time. We played at Pretoria Boys High last week and the games did start real early, but then by 14:00 they were finished, one could make it to the game in time so a larger percentage of supporters would have been able to make it to a game. In KZN first game is at 9 or so and 1xv kick off at 15:00/15:30 endin at about 16:30/17:00 so if playing outside DBN making the game is really hard or a 17:00 game impossible to attend! It is my contention that that is a large problem The Sharks have in filling the stadium. Durbanites are generally apathetic, and the rest of us who normally are the ones that attend home games are supporting sons in the Midlands! Scheduling an earlier start would be so much easier and ensure greater participation at games!

I have been thinking of booking a meeting with Ryan Strudwick and discuss this with him, if we win on Sat it would make this a WHOLE lot easier!

  • I don’t know what to think. 4 players “out of position”. I would have made minimal changes to the team, so only Bosman in at 12. Jordaan and Lambie on the bench.

But, this line up has x-factor written all over it and it might just make the Chiefs a wee bit nervous. That this backline has what it takes and can do it, I have no doubt about. Plum managed to be not to predictable at all this past few games thus far.

Chiefs use to not have a forward pack, and Sharks for a LONG while now did not have a backline worth mentioning. They’ve both solved their short comings.

Both teams are brimming with talent from 1 – 22, there’s just no way to call this one. The greatest current and future talent in NZ and SA rugby will be on display.
