SARU has just announced that WP midfielder Juan de Jongh has been called up to the Rugby Championship squad.
The worst has been confirmed, with JP Pietersen’s broken thumb set to keep him out of action for anything between 6 and 8 weeks. Coach Heyneke Meyer has explained that with Pietersen out, the Boks are a little short of midfield options, hence the decision to call up another centre. While JP would undoubtedly have been first choice at right wing, the fact that he’s been used in the centres this year made him a viable option at 13 as well and with only three midfielders named in the original squad, his utility may have been useful there.
The Boks have adequate wing cover in Bryan Habana, Lwazi Mvovo, JJ Engelbrecht and Francois Hougaard, hence the decision not to bring Gio Aplon in at this stage.Tweet
