Currie Cup is back and I am stoked

Now that the Super Rugby has finally drawn to a close its time to focus on something very dear to many South Africans ,the Absa Currie Cup.

While there are a growing number of folks who can’t get excited for the Currie Cup and who only tune in for Super Rugby I can’t find myself joining that club, for me the Currie Cup is it!

As a Western Province supporter nothing makes me happier than seeing the Blue and White hoops in action and going down to Newlands and being able to scream PROOOOOVINCE is a wonderful thing , I’m certain that the Sharks , Bulls, Lions and Cheetahs fans have similar traditions that don’t apply during Super Rugby.

These days the Currie Cup is viewed as a watered down competition as the Springboks don’t participate but I have to ask, So What? The beauty of the Currie Cup is that we get to see the youngsters who we talk about on forums such as these, the youngsters we beg the coaches to pick and also get to see some youngsters we know nothing about show us why they are going to be something special, I don’t think I should remind Sharksworld of a certain Francois Steyn destroying Western Province on his own in a monsoon. Similarly being at Newlands and seeing a fresh faced Juan de Jongh leaving the Sharks flummoxed –the same game that Luke Watson tossed Jean Deysel around like a rag doll.

Friday night sees the Blue Bulls host Griquas at Loftus at 19:10, the men from Kimberley know all too well how to humble any of the Big 5 teams and will be looking to make an early statement this season. Saturday afternoon has the Golden Lions hosting the Cheetahs at Coca Cola park, The Lions are currently without a coaching team and have just had their inspirational captain Josh Strauss hand over the arm band so that he can concentrate on playing blindside flank, things can’t be looking too rosy for the defending champions. At 19:10 on Saturday there will be a grudge match of sorts as the Sharks not quite done with collecting voyager miles head back to the Cape to face a team who they dumped out of the Super Rugby competition last week. The boys in black although enjoying a good support base in Cape Town are going to be in for an extremely hostile reception from the stands as there are plenty folks still not over that loss and will be baying for blood.

The Currie Cup is as South African as biltong, boerewors, Pinotage and Castle lager and as satisfying and entertaining as having those ingredients available to you around a fire, get behind you team and get excited. The Currie Cup is back and I am stoked. PROOOOVINCE!

  • I agree on your sentiments regarding the Currie Cup but must add that Im not quiete ready for it yet. I can understand Province supporters anticipation for the Currie Cup, after all if they dont win it this year, with their near full Super15 squad then I dont know.

  • I’ve got a rugby hangover!

Frankly I’m a bit tired of rugby and will probably only watch the tests and some of the Sharks games

I even promised my wife that we’ll start doing some work around the house and I’m a lazy bugger.

  • My only problem here with the Sharks fielding a VC team is this, I know how fickle our supporters are!!!

People i am all for them getting a rest, its 100% the correct thing to do, but come a few weeks from now and they not doing to well in the race for the cup, most of the supporters here will be slating them and calling for Plums head again. NOT SO???

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 15) : To be honest this year we need to use the CC as a stepping stone to prepare for next year’s S15. If we manage to make the final = that would be a bonus to me.

The S15 guys who traveled need a decent break. They will be knackered from the travel, the physical toll and the mental side of being in playoff mode since the Bulls game

  • @robdylan (Comment 44) : Maybe someone needs to be converted to an eighth man, one position SA is a bit thin on it seems.

PSdT would be the perfect guy for that, he was brilliant at flank for the baby Boks, but we’ve got far too many flanks in SA. Just please don’t send him to the “Pierre Spies school for metro-eighth-men”.

I think Sykes would be well advised to head over to a Euro club or rejoin his former Irish club.

  • There’s been lots of mention of Bresler. I think the man deserves serious Springbok consideration. He’s been immense this year. He could play either side of the scrum in my view – good enough as a lineout lock but physical enough to be a no4. To boot he gets around the field and tackles. He’s caused both Skeate and Hargreaves to seek greener pastures.

It’s sad that the main role of the Currie Cup has been reduced to increasing depth for Superrugby, especially from this year onwards.

Thank you for establishing this great website where rugby enthusiasts can share their views…i really enjoy reading what the various members say here. Have a great day! Keep on with the good work.
