Sharks name 28 for Currie Cup

With three players currently on the injured list – and ten others with the Boks – the Sharks have been forced to name a weakened 28-man squad to do battle in this year’s Currie Cup.

In addition to those players with the Boks, neither Ryan Kankowski nor Fred Michalak will be around, having opted to head overseas on completion of the Super Rugby tournament.

The rest of the Super Rugby squad, coupled with those players who have been on the fringes of selection all year, comprise the bulk of the Currie cup squad. Tim Whitehead, Kyle Cooper and Pieter-Steph du Toit are currently unavailable through injury, but should hopefully come back into the reckoning soon.

The Sharks have managed to avoid raiding the under 21 ranks too much this time around, with only Franna Kleinhans, Paul Jordaan and du Toit still eligible for that age-group.

  • I think this is a reasonably predictable squad… and as strong as we could pick.

Clear issue is at loosehead, as always, but let’s hope that Julian can cover that position if needed. Only 3 props is a worry, but I guess one of Schonert or Mienie will be called up if needed, because the under 21s have 4 great props.

As we predicted as well, there’s no clear flyhalf option here… Gouws/Tjop/Meyer are the options… I wonder who will be asked to step up?

  • I would make Meyer 1st choice 10, I hope Hoffman and Joubert can show us why the Sharks thought they would be good buys? Can’t they put Joubert on early pension or sell him to the Kings and get De Wet to make a come back?

  • I’d like to see Meyer Bosman at 10, but that leaves us a little thin at centre, with only Paul Jordaan, who seems a little injury prone, and Tim Whitehead, who is currently injured. Maybe now’s the time to experiment with Louis Ludik or Odwa Ndungane in the 13 jersey?

  • I prefer the props to be switched and Ludik without a “c” ;)

With that said… Bosman inside center, Viljoen fly-half, Ludik full-back is a better option because I just cannot survive another Marius Joubert-fiasco.

  • When du Toit’s injury has healed I think he should start with Bresler in place of Sykes who should be benched… But that’s just my opionion.

We’re looking a bit thin for this Currie Cup season, but what can you expect after a long Super Rugby season where the Sharks performed so well that over half the team got selected for the Bokke or burnt out and got injured…

  • @The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 18) : I know this is crazy, but the under 21 side is so short of locks… it almost seems a shame not to use Steph there… given that we have 4 other good senior locks available.
