Province ring changes as Duane returns

Following their surprise first round defeat to the Sharks at Newlands last weekend, Western Province have been forced to make a few changes to their team to face Griquas in Kimberley this Saturday.

The good news for the Cape based side is that Duane Vermeulen is in the starting line-up, starting in the familiar eight jersey. This after a lengthy spell out of the game, following a knee injury during Super Rugby.

The bad news is that stalwarts Joe Pietersen, Dewaldt Duvenhage and to a lesser extent Burton Francis, are missing from the team following injuries and rotation on the part of Duvenhage, who is missing from the match 22 altogether to take a much needed break after a long season.

Gio Aplon shifts into the fullback role, with Ederies Arendse making his Currie Cup debut on the wing. Duvenhage’s place is taken by Louis Schreuder, while Nic Groom comes onto the bench. Demetri Catrakilis will take over from Francis at flyhalf.

Amongst the forwards, Vermeulen’s return sees Jebb Sinclair dropping to the bench, while ginger ninja Steven Kitshoff returns to bolster the front row.

The bench could see a few more debuts, should the players be used, as Wilhelm van der Sluys, Kurt Coleman and Damian de Allende could make first starts.

Western Province: 15 Gio Aplon, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 JP du Plessis, 12 Marcel Brache (vice-captain), 11 Ederies Arendse*, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Louis Schreuder, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Tyrone Holmes, 6 Deon Fourie (captain), 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Don Armand, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg, 1 Steven Kitshoff

Substitutes: 16 Siyabonga Ntubeni, 17 Brok Harris, 18 Wilhelm van der Sluys*, 19 Jebb Sinclair, 20 Nic Groom, 21 Kurt Coleman*, 22 Damian de Allende*

  • amazing that they would go to Kimberley without Duvenage. Are they even trying to win this thing?

Probably thinking that this is their best shot at resting him, playing the Lions away next weekend and then hosting the Bulls?

The last thing they want is to lose him for the entire Currie Cup

  • Thank goodness Duvenage is not involved.

Hopefully young Schreuder will stake a claim.

    He’s good but he ain’t no Cobus Reinach… :???:

    *toeing the line*

Lucky for me I’ve had a good night out. Alcohol gives you infinite patience for stupidity.

Anyway, not sure what the heck AC is doing here. Probably should’ve known that he’d lost the plot though when he made Marcel Brache his vice-captain, or Deon Fourie his captain for that matter.

Ederies Arendese? He’s got plenty of talented wingers he can pick from…

What scares me the most is that he’s gone backwards in selecting Catrakilis & Coleman as his 10′s.

And the rest of the team looks like they should be playing Vodacom Cup rugby

Which other winger should we select ahead of Arendse?? Poolman is off to Ireland and Mbovane is still injured.

As for flyhalf, Gary van Aswegan hasn’t played a full 80 mins in months and will be playing club rugby for Maties this week.

Should we just include him at the all important flyhalf position or does it make sense to play the Greek who has actually won a few games for WP with his accurate goal kicking??

  • @hendrikp (Comment 9) : I honestly don’t know many of the young WP players (I can hardly keep up with those at the Sharks) but always interested in learning. Who would you have selected at flyhalf and wing respectively? And do you disagree on any of the other selections?

“We’ve got plenty flyhalf options in Gary van Aswegen, Demetri Catrakilis and Kurt Coleman. I just feel with Gary that he probably needs a bit of game time. I had a long chat with him today and one option is for him to play a few club games (for the Maties). There’s no doubting his talent, but it’s just about getting his sharpness back. Both Demetri and Kurt played in the Vodacom Cup and Kurt, until recently, was playing for the Eagles in the First Division. Rigtht now it’s all about getting Gary as sharp as possible and he would achieve that playing club rugby.

    Dean Hammond?

Or play JP du Plessis on the wing and stick Kobus van Wyk into the midfield.

With Aplon moving to fullback as well… why not rather look for a fullback?

Dillyn Leyds played there for the SA U20 team.

Timo Swiel comes with a BIG reputation.

Heinrich Steyl was good enough last season.

Arendse making it looks like an attempt to gain favor with someone or something to do with WP club rugby.

Have you seen Arendse play yet??

As for the other youngsters, they are still very young and we’ve already lost too many experienced players.

Brache is fine and I’ve seen Arendse in the flesh – he is VERY quick!

Is that a quote from Pdivvy or AC. Either way Im confused, as, if those are their feelings why was van Aswegen on the bench and not Catrakilis for last weekends game?

Maybe Allister realised he made a mistake by including him too soon after his long injury lay-off. ;-)

Btw, you seem to mention Divvy quite often – do you miss him??

  • They have had a lot of young players bought by the bulls recently so maybe this is the dregs left behind

    @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) :
The last two times they played there, actually, 3/9/2011 and 7/8/2010. In fact, province have only lost in Kimberly twice since 2003, both times by a single point, 7/8/2009 they lost 33-32, and 12/7/2008 they lost 21-20. Interestinlgy, both times the referee was Craig Joubert! Apart from these two games, province have not lost to griquas at all since 2003, they closest griquas have come is 26-26, on 16/7/2011.

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : No problem, quite easy if you can do this:
    select * from currie_cup
    where home_team in (‘griquas’,'province’)
    and away_team in (‘griquas’,'province’)
    order by date_played
