Sharks captain Keegan Daniel has been named to start for the Springboks for the first time on Saturday, when he wears the number 8 jersey against Argentina.

Daniel comes in for the injured Pierre Spies in a Springbok pack that, for the first time in ten years, contains not a single Bulls representative. In fact, in a scary coincidence, the last time that a Bok side featured no Bulls in the starting pack was exactly ten years ago this Friday! Daniel completes and all-Sharks back row with flankers Marcell Coetzee and Willem Alberts and will be the sixth Shark in the starting pack, with the front-row unit of Beast Mtawarira and the du Plessis brothers also retained.

The Stormers’ Andries Bekker and Eben Etzebeth will play together in the second row for the first time at Test level.

Amongst the backs, changes have come at wing and fullback, where Lwazi Mvovo will start his fifth test at wing and Zane Kirchner in the last line of defence. Two Michaelhouse boys, ironically both named Pat, will be on the bench, with Pat Cilliers set to become that school’s second-ever test Springbok if he makes it onto the field. Namesake Lambie has 13 test appearances to his credit, but will be alongside another potential debutant, Bulls utility JJ Engelbrecht, on the replacements bench.

Frans Steyn, back at inside centre, plays in his 50th test match.

Boks v Argentina:

15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers (capt), 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira
16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Patric Cilliers, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Jacques Potgieter, 20 Ruan Pienaar, 21Pat Lambie , 22 JJ Engelbrecht

With Mr. glass-spine starting I would have thought that he would rather chose a 5 lock on the bench.

  • @Ice (Comment 50) : Not really :)

The way I remember it they have always been the Pumas, but when they toured SA in the exclusion years they weren’t allowed to tour as an Argentinian national side so they toured as the Jaguars led by Hugo Porta if I remember correctly. I believe that is the only time they were toured as the Jaguars and may have been called the Pumas as they were in effect an unsanctioned Puma team. Sort of like when Andy Dalton or was it Grant Fox lead the Cavaliers to SA.

  • “The first trip of the Argentina national rugby team to the other side of the Atlantic was to Rhodesia and South Africa in 1965. The team acquired the nickname “Pumas”, from a local journalist after their first tour match, a defeat to Salisbury. The book “Be Pumas” recalls the Wackley Farmer of Rhodesia magazine commenting on the emblem embroidered on the tourists’ jerseys was like a puma – rather than a jaguar.” As per wikipedia.

  • “The Pumas nickname is the result of an error made by Carl Kohler, a journalist for the then Die Transvaler newspaper in South Africa, while following the team during their first overseas tour ever — to Southern Africa in 1965. He tried to devise a catchy nickname for the team similar to existing international team nicknames such as All Blacks, Springboks, and Wallabies. He asked Isak van Heerden, the then coach of the Natal Rugby team who was asked by the SARB to assist with the tour, for ideas. They saw a picture of a type of lion with spots on the UAR crest. Kohler was aware that the Americas had jaguars and pumas, and as he was under pressure to submit his article, made a guess and called them the Pumas, instead of the actual jaguar. The mistake stuck, and was eventually adopted by the Argentines themselves (although the UAR crest still depicts a jaguar)”

Kick and Hope = below average
X-factory = still fighting the y-chromosome for dominance

The last time Zane resembled potential was for the Griquas, is HM still holding on to that dream maybe?

Oh well, at least Keegan offers some form of a silver lining behind this very dark depressingly blue cloud.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 78) : He sees a safe player in the wake of many injuries and therefore a huge lack of depth at 15 for SA.

He could select Gio, but I won’t be the one who argues his case, he’s been quiet this year, nothing better than Zane.

Taute is an option but injured.

Ludik is an option, but only based on his last 4 or 5 games.

Andries Coetzee just came back from an injury and still has to put in a few more solid performances before a Bok call up can be justified.

Willie le Roux would have been a great option, especially coming of the bench to see what he can do, but he’s still young and I can see why Meyer didn’t just draft him straight into the Bok 15.

Then there’s Lambie, but he’s been very up and down with that injury of his. I trust Pat, but Meyer don’t have to show blind faith in a player. Especially in a position that I don’t think suits him best!

  • Zane Kirchner isn’t that bad guys ,his tactical game needs alot of work ,but he runs hard lines and is a committed player. Not a world beater but hell have to do for now .Lambie imo is not a fullback .

There are two players who id like to see ;Coetzee and in a few years that Jesse Kriel ,provided he makes a senior rugby debut in the next two years or so

  • @Letgo (Comment 80) : @Talent (Comment 82) : Now see I agree that Lambie is a FH, but HM says he’s a fullback, and honestly I’ve seen more from Lambie in the first two tests of the bench than from Zane in all his games as Springbok at fh.

Kirchner runs hard lines straight into the defense and then gets tackled backwards, seems to be a trick he picked up since joining the blues’ bulls.

So I’ll agree with Zane at fullback as long as Lambie is on the bench for FH, which he’s not.

  • @Letgo (Comment 80) : Yes if we have to be honest you`ve got to admit Lambie didn`t exactly cover himself in glory when he returned after his injury.

    Meyer made the safe call.

    Well said.

I find it amusing when the ordinary supporter thinks he knows better than the Bok coach. Hilarious!

Here`s a guy who schedules his Wedding on the same day that he`s supposed to play for the Bokke!

I say send him back to the Sharks for the CC to teach him a lesson!
