Following the news that the EP Kings will be participating in Super Rugby in 2013 the first of their new signings has been announced, WP Currie Cup flyhalf Demitri Catrakilis has had his move confirmed by Anthony Johnson of World Artists.

While Catrakilis is not exactly a big name signing the player has enjoyed a reasonable amount of success playing at Currie Cup level after playing Western Cape club rugby a mere 2 seasons ago.

Its likely that Catrakilis will complete his Currie Cup duties with DHL Western Province before moving off to PE. It has also been reported that Deon van Rensburg is on his way to the coast from Jozi and the next few days are going to be interesting on the transfer front with Lions players executing escape clauses in their contracts or having their lawyers look to create one.

  • So, how many players that moved to Jozi to get SR exposure are still considering that a good move?
Silly season is about to get into full swing.

  • Jantjies and Bondiseo to end up at Province, Derrick Minnie will most probably be bought by the Bulls and Butchie to a small union or overseas again?

  • The one player who I won’t mind to have back in Durbs from the Lions is Pat Cilliers.

  • @MJ (Comment 5) : That would be a wise choice for both Prooooblems and Strauss.

Let’s see how many players abandon the Lions before we reach the midway stage of the CC season.

  • Did Jake White time his trip to SA to look for a marquee signing at the Lions? Think he was after a lock….maybe ol’ Hendrik Roodt might be looking to become a ‘roo again

  • They also bought Michael Kilian a couple of weeks back. They are going to be much stronger than what they are now. I think we are about to see a couple of interesting changes in SA rugby.

  • Good for Catrakilis. Timing is everything and I think he has timed this pretty well. I hope he does well for the Kings.

  • Smart move for him. This way he might be able to get some super rugby game time.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 3) :

Butch is retiring end of this season anyway.

As for Bondesio… What makes you think we’d be interested in him in any way? We’ve got three good scrumhalves to pick from in Duvenage, Schreuder & Groom, and then we’ve got Ricky Schroeder coming through as well. We don’t need to waste money on a guy who’s not nearly up there.

Jantjies really has 3 options. The Bulls or Cheetahs won’t be interested (or willing to pay him a competitive salary), so either the Sharks (depending on what they do with Lambie), Province (if van Aswegen doesn’t pick up his game) or the Kings.

Minnie also won’t go to the Bulls. As bad as Stegmann is, he fits the Bulls pattern much better then Minnie, who’s size will also count against him. Minnie would be best off going to the Kings, or staying at the Lions despite their relegation.

  • Moves I’d like to see…

    Pat Cilliers to the Stormers.
Franco van der Merwe, Michael Rhodes & Warren Whiteley to the Cheetahs.

And Jaco Taute to the Sharks. Don’t come at me with the “we have enough good young centres”. When you have a chance to sign one of the very best, and add far more physicality in your midfield, you don’t say no. Good as Jordaan can be, Taute is better at this stage.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 16) : Id take Bondesio above any of those you mentioned, and Im not exactly a Bondesio fan but then he may not fit into the boorish Province / Stormers game plan as the are those that are there already. Taute would be wasted at the Stormers as are their current centres.

  • Agree Sammy.

Bondesio is infinitely better than the overrated Duvenage.

Also, Taute is a much better fullback than centre.
