Griquas coach Pote Human has made just one unenforced change to his side to face Western Province this weekend, but has had his hand forced in other areas due to injury and suspension.
Former Maties captain Wesley Wilkins makes a long-expected return to the side at open-side flank this week, after being out of the game for the better part of a year. Justin Downey moves from the number 6 jersey over to the other side of the scrum as a result, displacing Jonathan Adendorff, who falls right out of the 22.
The loss of Luzuko Vulindlu and JP Nel to injury – and Willie le Roux to suspension – has prompted something of a back-line reshuffle. Another former Maties player, outside centre Jean Stemmet, comes in for Nel at 13, with Wilmaure Louw selected in Vulindlu’s place at right wing. Flyhalf Francois Brummer will move back to fullback for le Roux, with Marnitz Boshoff taking over at pivot.
The new faces on the bench are backs Richard Lawson and Walter Venter, the latter a stalwart for the Lions in years gone by. Human has reiterated that winning all their home games is non-negotiable for his side and that heads will roll if his team cannot improve on their discipline – and overall performance – against WP this week.
