The Springbok team to face Argentina in the second Rugby Championship game this weekend has been announced, with one injury enforced change, one bench swop and one positional change.

The backline is unchanged with the injury that kept Bryan Habana on crutches for a while clearing in time for him to take the field. Ruan Pienaar can feel hard done by for not being rewarded with a start following a good showing from the bench last week.

Amongst the forwards, Adriaan Strauss replaces the injured Bismarck du Plessis, as expected, while there is also a loose trio shuffle, with Keegan Daniel relegated to the bench in favour of Jacques Potgieter, who takes over on the flank while Willem Alberts moves to the back of the scrum.

On the bench, Tiaan Liebenberg gets the nod ahead of Craig Burden to play second hooker, while the rest of the bench remains unchanged.

South Africa: 15 Zane Kirchner; 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers (captain), 12 Francois Steyn, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Willem Alberts, 7 Jacques Potgieter, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Tendai Mtawarira

Substitutes: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Pat Cilliers, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Keegan Daniel, 20 Ruan Pienaar, 21 Patrick Lambie, 22 JJ Engelbrecht

  • I was so bored by the one-dimensional play last week that I might actually give this game a skip since it looks like HM is going to really push for the boredom train.

NZ runs other teams off their feet. Apparently it’s the Boks plan to bore the other team to death!!!

  • I must be honest and say I don’t see this team beating nz or even aus. If hm doesn’t change something those teams will just run us out of the game. We can’t just keep kicking the ball away wen we have a super talented backline. Feel sorry for keegan aswell, can’t believe he only given one chance. Hopefully he gets on this weekend and has a blinder

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 3) : HM will get his kudos if this monotonous team selection and game plan comes off against the kiwis.

Until such time I’ll lay the same accusation at HM’s feet as is leveled against Robbie Deans by former ozzie coach Alan Jones on Sport24:

“….the preoccupation is with trying to avoid defeat rather than trying to secure victory.”

  • Sheesh. dropping Keegan means no real chance of any turnovers. Going to be Bulldoze, up and under and pray. Or if up and under isn’t on, give toe poor Frans Steyn and tell him to hit it up.

  • I just don’t get the fetcher thing at all. Think of all the other good sides. There is generally a clever fetcher. Also to give Daniel only 50mins and then drop him for another ball carrier just makes me irritated. That’s not right.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 5) : Amen to that.

But let’s be honest, there is no way this game plan is going to succeed against the kiwis. In recent years the laws have been changed to accommodate the kiwis a little more than teams who only skop-en-bid. So we’ll lose against them.

We’ve basically already beaten the Argies but let’s be fair it’ll take a little while before they’re up to Southern Hemisphere standard

The Aussies are also playing not to lose, but they have picked creative players like Cooper in the team so when the s***t hits the fan they’ll be able to turn it on. We might actually lose against them as well.

That means that our great team will only come 2nd, maybe 3rd.

  • The major conundrum for the Boks is that whenever we did try and run with the ball, the ball was turned over against the Argies. So in that sense kick and chase is almost the safer option at the moment, as our protection of our ball at the breakdown is really poor at the moment.

I think the key thing in rugby is not to become too predictable. HM thinks executing a predictable plan at 100% efficiency is the way to go. That will not work at international level – the other teams have worked us out, and will easily counter this. They also have big boys who can stop us in our tracks.

I don’t have an issue with a well executed kick-chase – Sharks scored a few tries from up-and-unders, e.g. Ludik in the semi. It just needs to be used at the right time, and mixed up with other strategies too

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 15) : Im sure Meyer thinks he is also doing that. My issue is, as is yours, according to your earlier post “playing to avoid defeat”. It does not necessarily make for the selection of the best player but rather for someone that can execute a game plan better. It makes for boring stuff.
But its still very early days in HM’s tenure and Im sure there are many more steps of evolution to his game plan that will bring a balance to the ultimate game that we will play. I hope so at least.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 17) : That’s what I’m also hoping for – looking at how he started with the blue fools, bottom of the S12 log, and everyone in baby blue were calling for his head.

So possibly this is a long term plan where he is slowly making minor changes to the Boks style of rugby, up to the point where finally in 3 – 4 years time we won’t recognise the game plan of this year.

It’s just disappointing that the more talented players are being left out of the team, while HM comes up with his revolutionary “winning rugby” style.

But at least we don’t have to listen to another 4 year “judge me after the world cup” plan. We’re possibly too impatient with the man, but we’ve had to endure some rubbish rugby from our boys for many years, while we know we can/should be no. 1 in the world.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 14) : it’s a default bulls coach mentality…heyneke is working from a premise of “my pedigree is not in question, so i know what i’m doing” which means WHATEVER happens on matchday, it is the the PLAYERS that didn’t execute his ingenious and infallible game plan that won him super rugby!

the problem with this is, men like deans, smith, jones have won super rugby and come unstuck at international level meaning super rugby success is no perfect measure for success in Test scene.

I’m so aligned with you recent comments on the Boks it’s uncanny.

I think that Meyer is falling back on an apparent pedigree and job security that neither of his predecessors had. Plays the same game plan and players yet no disparaging comments. How long will it all last I wonder? Coaching honeymoons in S.A. are generally short.

A coach worthy of his team? We will see.
