Bok squad sees a few changes

The Springbok squad to tour Australia and New Zealand has been announced, with the anticipated inclusion of Johan Goosen and Duane Vermeulen confirmed in the squad. A surprise inclusion is that of Bath player Francois Louw, who comes into the spot left vacant by the injured Siya Kolisi. There is also a return to the squad for Juan de Jongh.

Craig Burden also gets to tour again, as third choice hooker behind Adriaan Strauss and Tiaan Liebenberg, while Keegan Daniel and JJ Engelbrecht are left behind weeks after making their first starts.

The squad of 28 players excludes Elton Jantjes, who gets to run wild in the Currie Cup campaign, while Pat Lambie clocks in more Voyager Miles by flying to the Antipodes to carry tackle bags. With the inclusion of both Vermeulen and Louw we can expect a major shuffle amongst the loose forwards.

The Springbok squad for the Australasian leg of The Castle Rugby Championship is:

Willem Alberts
Andries Bekker
Craig Burden
Pat Cilliers
Marcell Coetzee
Juan de Jongh
Jean de Villiers (captain)
Jannie du Plessis
Eben Etzebeth
Johan Goosen
Dean Greyling
Bryan Habana
Francois Hougaard
Zane Kirchner
Juandré Kruger
Pat Lambie
Tiaan Liebenberg
Francois Louw
Tendai Mtawarira
Lwazi Mvovo
Ruan Pienaar
Jacques Potgieter
Frans Steyn
Morné Steyn
Adriaan Strauss
Flip van der Merwe
Jano Vermaak
Duane Vermeulen

  • Not a bad squad at all.

So JJ, Elton and Daniel miss out. :???:

Someone like CJ Stnader sure has to rue the fact that he has announced a move to Europe, else I am sure he would have been in there in place of Louw?!

  • So now Lambie isn’t in the team as a flyhalf anymore but only a fullback. The sucks totally. Poor Goosen only just came back too.

Well, rumor has it that Heyneke doesn’t really think much of Stander as a rugby player. That is why he decided to pack his bags for Europe in the first place… apparently.

  • Can’t see us coming away with any wins in Australasia.

Spent a mini fortune for plane tickets, accommodation, tickets etc. for Dunedin. Maybe I shouldn’t have.

Then again, last time I went down there for a Bok game Ricky Januarie pulled a miracle out of the bag :D

Why is POtgieter there and Stegmann?? they been useless

I am Glad Keegan is out as i have no doubt HM was setting him up to fail, HM is all About large Loose forwards with Braun, Keegan was never ever gonna be a Skop and Jag artist,

I find it hard to blame Steyn. Wasn’t happy with him at all, and I think Johan Goosen – if he can stay fit damnit – is an outstanding flyhalf, but there isn’t much he could’ve done in Mendoza considering how poorly our forwards played.

Outside of Eben Etzebeth & Adriaan Strauss I’d call the entire forward packs performances pathetic, at best.

Stander is a freak. Let me put it this way… if he were an Australian or Kiwi, he’d be in their starting line-ups IMO.

He’ll make one hell of a loose-forward for Ireland once he qualifies. Just a shame he didn’t go a year earlier. Then he would’ve been eligible for the next World Cup.

  • @Dunx (Comment 5) : Yes I don’t understand, before the 1st test vs England Ricardo said on TV that they only rated Lambie as a FH, then a few weeks later HM said they only see him as a FB, who knows what’s going on there??? Lambie is being broken. I said all along, keep him on FH, but then no Plum also had to move him to FB and play Freddy at FH. I feel for this man.
As for Goosen, I don’t think this is right given his experience and layoff on injury. If it was say Bissie then id fully understand.

First they have to play behind a has been, now one gets dropped completely, and the other moved to his 2nd, maybe even third best position covering for another waste of space while a 20 year old who has potential, but has proved absolutely nothing yet gets shoved in ahead of them!

That last part being key here, he plays the game he sees before him, Heyneke doesn’t like that, a forward must bash it up at all times, never showing a spark of creativity, an quickly recycle so Hougie or Morne can kick

  • There are some “interesting” selections! HM said KD would play against Aus, yet drops him for FL, who last played when?! Lambie won’t even make the 22 now with the Golden Goosen taking his place on the bench – only JG’ll get a chance to play. Vermeulen and Goosen have not played enough rugby, as talented as they may be. FL the only “specialist opensider” so he has to start and DV the only specialist 8 – what happens to MC, the best loosie in SA this year? Bench rider? The biggest joke is that HM selects 8 Bulls and wants to play Bulls rugby, but he’s only likely to start with 3 – and all of them are lucky at that (9, 10 and 15). I’m not losing faith in HM – I’ve lost it.

  • @Uli (Comment 45) :

No the gameplan hasnt changed one iota. The gameplan is big forward runners trying to gather momentum by winning the collisions with a heavy emphasis on contestable kicks through boxkicking and up and unders. That is it.

The only difference between the Argentina and England game is that it took the English two test matches to properly man up and make tackles. The 2nd test in JHB was just big ball carriers gathering momentum because the English couldnt deal with the collisions with a few sporadic offloads here and there.

Problem is if you come up against a team that is just as big and refuses to yield the gainline then you are goosed as evidenced by the game v Argentina and others (even Scotland in November 2010!!!!).

  • The offloading of the All Blacks was amazing!!

I watched a few of the classic games on ESPN from the mid-90′s and early 2000′s. The best Bok teams always offloaded the ball in contact and kept the opposition on the back foot because they were unpredictable and never gave their opposition time to reset because there were far fewer rucks!

The game plan at the moment is ineffective as the ball is being recycled too slowly!

  • @Uli (Comment 50) :

I thought the same as you, but rewatched the first 20 mins and I could maybe count 1 or 2 offloads, the Bismarck one for Hougaard’s try. From what i could see there wasnt a concerted effort to try and offload like what the Sharks did v Bulls, Reds. The England side coudlnt deal with our brute force and physicality – there was no real concerted effort to offload.

Until we get proper attack coaches that know how to break down defences and get our players to start thinking on their feet and attacking space and employing decoy runners etc we are going to fail time and time again against teams that simply stand up to our physicality.

Yep, agree completely, the best rugby to play is offloading rugby – defences struggle to cope with it and it obviously avoids a breakdown. The ironic thing is that the Argies scored a very good try against us which consisted of a number of offloads, whereas our try was a charge down. Kinda says it all doesnt it!!!

I hate being negative but I predict at least 3/4 losses, with it most likely being 4, from here on in. The only way we can gain any sort of ascendency or control is with Pienaar at 9 BUT WE KNOW HM DOESNT ENJOY PICKING THE BEST PLAYERS

Pienaar has to start at 9 with Vermaak as his back up and Hougaard can shift to wing for Habana.

Lambie in at 10 with Goosen on the bench. Morne running on with the water and kicking tee.

    Burden (only against Aus)
    Cilliers
    Flip
    Coetzee
    Pienaar

  • Why was Mallet overlooked as Springbok coach again? Where is Potgieter better than Daniel? Why is Kirchner still at fullback? Why is MSteyn still flyhalf? Why is Hougaard not on the wing instead of Habana? How can Flouw be a better openside flanker than either MC or KD? Why was Flo chosen above Jean Deysel? If HM is choosing overseas based players, why not Gerhard Mostert instead of Flip? I know, they are rhetorical questions – they cannot be answered by the incumbent coach nor the selectors (who are they again?). Forgive my cynicism, but I, too have lost faith in HM. I was never a fan of his and like most, wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt (seems there was a lot of doubt). Horses for courses? Play Keegan against Australia? My fairweather friend HM, you certainly do back yourself into a corner or,no, “I was misquoted by the press” seems to be your retort or response or excuse. You choose. This is not an attack on HM, but a comment on the current state of affairs.

  • @Megatron (Comment 78) : It would be great if this was true, but to be dropped in favour of a player who is mediocre or just come back from a long layoff smacks of nepotism (vote for me as coach & I will choose some of your players)& bullishness.I am an ardent Sharks fan, but can see the good in other players, whichever team they play for. I think Josh Strauss & Derek Minnie are great players. I like Robert Ebersohn as forward thinker, to name just a few.No provincialism here. You have to have emotional attachment to your team, like we have for the Springboks (if this blog is anything to go by).Nothing wrong with sticking by your team & principles.

  • 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 channel is unbalanced this is our downfall. Both FS and JDV performs close to the ball(12) and MS is a territorial orientated player and FH is a close quarter combat player. What in the entire line-up says “synergy”? And what ever happened to attacking channel 2 in order to bring in more defenders rather than pounding channel 1 the whole time and then kick the ball away!?! What in that statement made any sense? This is bad coaching and a bad game plan rather than poor execution and on field decision making

  • @Bakmister (Comment 86) : You’re missing the point of the gameplan entirely…

If we attack channel 2 then we’re taking the ball too wide and may surprise our opponents, create holes and then have to exploit them. By attacking channel 1 we play fair and give our opposition a chance to compete by being predictable. We also take the gentlemanly approach of kicking the ball away at every chance thus giving the other team a fair chance with the ball as it would be selfish to keep it in hand and not share.

Remember the old saying, “sharing is caring”

More experienced sides have lost to Scotland in recent times.
What irks me though is his player man management and his intended game plan ,perhaps showing his true color(s)*blue*ehem

  • @ChrisS (Comment 87) : Hehe

Just my opinion and in choosing a SA Barbarians team by not choosing any Bok tourists this is what a attack(offensive) minded approach, without losing any grunt up front looks like. Defence is attitude and where coaching starts. Once you mastered your defensive patterns you focus your offensive game plan on the natural ability of your players.

    15. L. Ludick, 14. W. Le Roux 13. P. Jordaan, 12. J. Serfontein, 11. B. Basson, 10. E. Jantjies, 9. F. Du Preez(For his pass only), 8. J. Strauss 7. CJ. Stander, 6. H. Brossouw, 5. R. Elstad, 4. B. Botha, 3. CJ vd Linde, 2. S. Brits, 1. JC jv Rensburg

    But then again who knows….

I think either Lambie or Goosen could have used these 2 weeks getting Currie Cup experience.

  • I don’t think Daniel was ever in HM’s plans so the sooner he gets back to Durban the better for us. Our loose trio with Daniel in for the Currie Cup looks good! I think Lambie will stay on the bench given the 5/2 split HM likes on the bench. He can cover half the backline. Given the available players, I think the squad is fine. (I understand that Brussouw is unavailable anyway.) Louw has to play and I think Burden should be on the bench for that X factor. Funny, when HM seems to suggest that maybe he should have a fetcher they are all injured.
