The Lions team to face the Blue Bulls this Saturday has been announced, with earlier fears of Josh Strauss missing the match confirmed.

There are a number of changes to the side that lost to Griquas last weekend, with Deon Helberg coming in for JR Esterhuizen on the right wing, Ruan Combrinck coming in for Anthony Volminck on the left wing and Alwyn Hollenbach returning to the midfield in place of Butch James. Michael Bondesio also starts ahead of Ross Cronje.

Amongst the forwards, Jaco Kriel drops to the bench in a swop with Cobus Grobbelaar, Hendrik Roodt replacing Strauss in the four jersey, CJ van der Linde missing out in favour of Jacobie Adriaanse and Bandise Maku and Callie Visagie swopping roles for the weekend.

There is a welcome return to the bench for Jaco Taute, who should see some game time in the second half after injuring himself in the Super Rugby campaign.

Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Deon Helberg, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Ruan Combrinck, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Willie Britz, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg (c).

Replacements: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 CJ van der Linde, 18 Michael Rhodes, 19 Jaco Kriel, 20 Ross Cronjé, 21 Butch James, 22 Jaco Taute.

  • No he can keep Lambie, the farther Lambie is from the Sharks, the better chance the Lions have to win the CC and Taute can just be good for the Lions

  • I think Ackkers picked a back-three that can counter attack for deep and field the highball we can expect from the bulls? We all know what Hollies and Mapoe can do when playing together and with Elton firing them on… I just hope they can fire together!

Tight five is great, just know that our loosies are in for a long night of tackling tackling tackling. Hope they will have the grunt to absorb the pressure and turn ball around in the process… Baywatch will have a huge task and one that we havn’t seen from him in a long time. Wonder if he can still pullfer some balls and get to the breakdown quick enough…

We can beat the bulls… We should beat the bulls, because we are the better team on paper but rugby is played on grass, not on paper!!!

A NFL player was once asked: “do you prefer grass or Astro-turf?” He replied: “dunno, never smoked Astro-turf before…”

  • I`m not so sure about those new guys on the wing for the Lions.
If Taute is really ready I would`ve started him on the wing for this one.

  • @Pierre… Helberg is a very good prospect and perfect player to punish the bulls if their kick-and-chase gameplan is not on-song… Combrink is a future star if he plays to his potential, he just needs to lift himself and the bull-style of hard, physical rugby is up his alley… Taute is still very rusty and will have to spend some time on the bench, his shoulder must be given about 15min to test it’s readiness? If Taute, Hollenbach, Coietzee and Elton fire on the weekend… The bulls are going to have to bring their best defensive effort!!!

  • Speaking of the Lions, did anyone else hear that MTN have committed to sponsor the Lions next year. I cant find anything on it but am sure I heard a report along those lines.
