The second round of matches gets under way for the Sharks under 19 side this week, with an away fixture against a Free State side that they beat easily at Kings Park in their season opener. Boland schoolboy Gideon Koegelenberg comes straight in to start his first game for his new province, in the number 4 jersey.
It’s not been plain sailing for Etienne Fynn’s side this season, with the team losing each of the last four games they played – against top tier opposition – at the end of the first round. The desire to beef up the pack for this encounter is obvious, with Koegelenberg playing alongside the big Myles Tucker in the second row and a third lock forward, Pretoria Boys High’s Dave Fisher, picked on the blindside flank.
Impressive loose forwards Andrew van Tonder and Jean Pretorius are back at their posts too after some time away with injuries and with big Marne Coetzee (also, incidentally, a schoolboy) at tighthead, the Sharks forwards should hopefully be able to provide their exciting backs with some decent ball.
That back unit is mostly unchanged, bar at scrumhalf where yet another schoolboy, Hilton’s Cameron Wright, comes in for the injured Stefan Ungerer.
There’s a new face on the bench too, in the form of former Oakdale and SWD captain Francois van der Vyver. He’s a loose forward these days, although up until very recently, he operated at inside centre for his school’s first team (incidentally, the same one that Meyer Bosman attended).
