Sharks under 21 coach Sean Everitt has been forced to change his settled backline ahead of this week’s home game against Border.
The team’s leading try-scorer, Sizo Maseko, unfortunately suffered a jaw injury against Free State last week – we’re told that allegations that he was punched by a Free State player to stop him scoring any further after two first half tries are inaccurate – and will be on the sidelines for a few weeks as a result. His loss is former Maritzburg utility back Keelin Bastew’s gain, with the latter coming off the bench to start in the number 11 jersey.
An unenforced change in the front row sees Baby Bok Maks van Dyk start at tighthead, with incumbent Nick Schonert moving across to the other side for the first time. Danie Mienie drops to the bench, while the two-week suspension for Allan Dell means a shift to the number 16 jersey for Duan Coertzen, opening up a gap for Paul Sanders as utility forward.
Another Maritzburg old boy comes into the squad for the first time this week to take Bastew’s spot on the bench. Mzo Mbona is a pacey winger who has had a great season with the Rovers under 20 side and has seen his try-scoring exploits rewarded with a call-up for the Sharks.
Edit: A late change to the side sees Francois Kleinahns start at openside in place of Murray Bondesio. Bondesio replaces Braam Steyn amongst the replacements.
