According to Brenden Nel of SuperSport, Blue Bulls prop Dawie Steyn has been ruled out of this weekend’s clash with the Cheetahs due to a calf strain.
Steyn’s place in the starting side should go to young Morne Mellet, in a Bulls side that will be otherwise strengthened by the addition of Bok tourists in Jano Vermaak and Jacques Potgieter. Both of the latter have been released by Heyneke Meyer to play a Currie Cup game this weekend.
The Bulls were further hoping that Bjorn Basson, who sustained a serious abdominal injury during the Super Rugby knock-outs, would return this week. The former Griquas man, though, despite now being fully fit, has been given an extra week off due to a death in his family. Our condolences obviously go out to Bjorn and his loved ones at this difficult time.
The Bulls side should be confirmed later today, as beleaguered coach Pine Pienaar continues to search for the right combination to lift his stuttering side off the foot of the competition table.
