Eat, Pray, Love…the Rugby Versions

Most fans on his site will have heard of the book from a loved one or even have endured the movie. Whether or not that’s more traumatic than sitting through a Bok game is open to debate at this moment. Thanks to Heyneke Meyer we now have our own adaptation of the story every time the Boks play. It’s called “Kick, Chase, Pray” and is followed, without fail, by the rugby fans’ sequel of “Scream, Swear, Drink”!

Public opinion seems to be very against this tactic and against Morne Steyn as a flyhalf option for the Boks due to his dismal kicking displays this year. The questions everyone is asking are; When will we see a new Bok pivot, who will assume the mantle and will we finally start running the ball?

The Rugby Championship is over for us as a competition but it is the ideal time to start experimenting with a new flyhalf and a more expansive, ball-in-hand syle. Tactical kicking will always be a useful option but it isn’t the ONLY option!! The Boks tactical kicking has been terrible and it would be well worth it for the Bok management to recruit Ronan O’Gara or Johnny Wilkinson on a short-term contract to teach the Boks the art of kicking for the corners and not straight down the opposition’s throats!

It isn’t too late to set the Bok ship back on a true course to winning ways but it requires some bold decisons by Meyer and Co. Fingers crossed that Bok games (and team selections) of the future hold far less drama for the fans than the movie!

  • @Megatron (Comment 1) : At the moment I’d rather watch one of your Kings’ matches than a Bok match. I dislike the Kings no-end, but at least they play something resembling Rugby

  • People who have a even slight understanding of the game of rugby will know that a good tactical kick will put the opposition under pressure.

HM says he’s gonna stick to the tactical kicking gameplan, fair enough Meyer, but right now your players aren’t even following that gameplan… Your up and unders go too far, your kicks down field gain no ground, they don’t place pressure on opposition players and they don’t reach the touchline (unless we’re in our 22)…

Fine, kick. Use that gameplan. It won us a World Cup and a whole lotta other stuff in 2009. But please stop this aimless kicking gameplan. It doesn’t work.

Oh, and another thing, please, please, please… You talk about only running the ball in the correct areas of the field –> the boys really need a few sessions on attacking whilst in this right area of the field because whilst we may not run the ball much, when we are in the right place to do so we generally stuff up… badly.

My rant done for the night, evening!

  • Nice article but do we really believe that HM will change his options?

  • The movie is worse, because it never had a chance of tuning out okay. With the Boks, even though it’s faint, there is always hope that things will turn up.

Only one or two positional changes, or a few very unfortunate freak accidents here and there and this team could look good again.

So Morne might be getting his last chance again, this means I’m actually hoping for this game to end badly, because clearly if we win HM will give all the praise to Morne. That can’t happen, because that would make Bok Rugby worse than EPL. I can’t endure anything more than 1 more game of Morne. That’s it.

Even this one would be a stretch for and I’m seriously considering getting a ‘When-Morne-is-replaced’ app on my phone. Then I can watch the last 5 or 10 minutes of the game when he’s not playing.
