The injury curse that has ravaged WP and the Stormers for the past two years has struck again with news that Gio Aplon and Gary Van Aswegan are both ruled out of this weekend’s crucial encounter against the defending Champions.

Gio Aplon has a grade 1 ligament injury and will be out for the next two weeks. His place at left wing is filled by the promising Damian de Allende who moves up from the bench. SA U20 star Pat Howard moves onto the bench as cover. • Nothing against Aplon (although it might sound like it), but I think this actually improves WP’s team.

Aplon is a magic moment type of player, in other words, when he doesn’t create magic, basically nothing happens.

From what I’ve seen of de Allende, he seems to be a more complete player. He will get WP over the advantage line every time. He runs great lines for the Centres to put him into spaces and he’s also quick and exciting.

WP won’t lose anything by playing de Allende.

  • @Letgo (Comment 5) : “WP won’t lose anything by playing de Allende.” Nothing, but a moment of magic (often the difference in such matches).

  • I don’t think it’s Aplon’s “hit or miss” achievements but more the fact WP/Stormers are relying on him too much. He is what Messi is to Argentina (football). Every player gets him involved and when he doesn’t perform, the team itself is clueless.

  • @TRF_Ezequiel (Comment 7) : Or sometimes the players get Messi or Aplon involved at the wrong times. Just because its Gio Aplon, doesn’t mean you should also pass the ball to him… Or always expect Aplon to do something. Aplon (or Messi) do what they do best when they receive the ball in space.

Yes, there are the moments when they create something from nothing, but these events are not “every time they get the ball” events…

Therefore I do not think its fair to say Aplon is misperforming.

  • Go LIONS,but i doubt we will. You just dont go to Newlands and beat WP easily, you have to work for it and the Lions just dont have the players to do it in Cape Town
