Smith return likely, but not for Cheetahs

If rumours are to be believed, Juan Smith will return to the rugby field in 2013. That’s the good news, the bad news is that it is likely to be in France.

The Volksblad newspaper reports that Smith has been approached by French Top 14 club Bayonne, and that the flanker will depart for France unless a South African team can match the sure-to-be-massive offer.

Smith has not played rugby since injuring himself in the opening weekend of Super Rugby 2011, and has since undergone multiple operations and an incredibly long rehabilitation period.

  • Great player but is unfortunately a walking injury so no SA franchise can afford to make a substantial offer knowing the probable medical bills. Its a sad situation but understandable as the guy tries to make a living out of the short career he has left.

  • Well he has been unemployed for 2 years he should go for the payday. Like Sheldon says, it would be silly for an SA franchise to make a counter , the money could be much better spent.

  • I hope the softer fields in France are kinder to his buggered legs. Good luck Juan. What a warrior

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : 2 years off from the game, surely enough time for everything to get stitched up. In fact the man may come back super charged.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 4) : ja, but Achilles is a bitch… some say it never properly heals once you’ve snapped it. And he’s done both knees in the past too, hasn’t he?

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : I sprained mine and it took a long time to get over but then again I never had the best treatment around (I never actually treated it properly at all)

Maybe its just the fan in my refusing to believe someone like Juan Smith can go out of the game so meekly .

  • I’m very bummed to hear this! I was hoping that he could come back and captain the Boks! He’s the logical option, a captain in the Gary Teichmann mould!

  • Still my favourite Bok player of this era. Pity about all the injuries – he would have made a great Bok captain

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 8) : I’m convinced that the way we expect our 7s to play in this country contributes to their nightmarish injury toll… just look at Smith, Alberts, Deysel and so on… those okes are simply always injured.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : Yeah – I am surprised how well Marcell is holding up so far. Actually better for him long term that HM is benching him at the moment

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) : Too true! We need to rotate our players more for Super Rugby, Currie Cup and the Internationals. Maybe 2 weeks on, 2 weeks benched where we can.

Bismarck and Pat shouldn’t play every single game next year!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : In the future you’ll see us doing what the French clubs do and sending our B teams into battle for away games.

No surprise that Deysel, Alberts, Bismarck, JPP and Pat all picked up injuries after prolonged exposure. Juan Smith has paid the cost for years of bashing and Morne Steyn is also fatigued after continual play since 2009.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 13) : I also think that teams should target certain games to win, then give the B-team guys a run for those games not targeted for wins.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 13) : ja – if the Cheetahs had more depth, Smith would have lasted longer.

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) : You want to be the coach that tells Juan he can’t play so that he can rest?

  • I sincerely hope that he gets an extended playing time in France, injury free. What a rugby player, what a man.
