No more rugby for Spies in 2012

SuperSport’s Brenden Nel reports that Pierre Spies’s finger injury will ensure that he next takes the field in anger during the 2013 season.

The Bulls Super Rugby captain sustained a fracture to one of his fingers late in his side’s campaign and was withdrawn from the Springbok squad to contest the inaugural Rugby Championship as a result. It was initially thought that he may return to play towards the latter stage of the Currie Cup, but the injury has not healed as quickly as expected after surgery.

It is not currently clear whether Spies will be fit in time to lead the Bulls in next season’s Super Rugby opener, but we know that he certainly won’t feature in the Currie Cup play-offs (along with most of his team mates, we suspect) or the Boks’ end of year tour.

  • That last line there about the Currie Cup play-offs has me

This is very, very good news. Duane Vermeulen can now cement his spot at 8 and if he does get injured (hopefully not) I hope to see old Marcell Coetzee get a chance. They say he can play 8 and it would be interesting to see how well he can –> maybe the end of year tour

Spies hate aside, I agree with @Dunx (Comment 3) : ; I think the lengthy injury layoff is going to see Spies come back a much better player. I have a feeling there won’t be many people in 2013 saying he doesn’t deserve the Bok no8 jersey. I hope I am right.
