Western Province coach Allister Coetzee has followed the trend set so far in team announcements, by naming all of his returnee Springboks in the match 22 to take on the Cheetahs this weekend.

The team will be led by Springbok captain Jean de Villiers, who forms a midfield partnership with feloow Bok Juan de Jongh. Bryan Habana playing on the wing is the only other change to the backline.

It is amongst the forwards though that the team is bolstered, with Duane Vermeulen forming an impressive loose trio with Don Armand and Deon Fourie, while an all Springbok second row in Andries Bekker and Eben Etzebeth will add much needed grunt to the pack. Tiaan Liebenberg also returns to the front row.

A fact that many might not know is that Eben Etzebeth will make his Currie Cup debut for Western Province, after already accumulating eight Springbok caps already this season.

WP – 15 Joe Pietersen, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Jean de Villiers (c), 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Don Armand, 6 Deon Fourie, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg, 1 Steven Kitshoff.

Subs: 16 Scara Ntubeni, 17 Brok Harris, 18 De Kock Steenkamp, 19 Jebb Sinclair, 20 Louis Scrueuder, 21 Marcel Brache, 22 Gio Aplon.

  • Unbelievable that Eben didn’t even make his debut last year, in fact he spent most of last season on the u21 bench, which make his meteorical rise through the ranks such a huge achievement

  • So everyone is using all their available boks. I guess the Lions will do the same but what would the Sharks do? I suppose Plum will be tempted to do the same.

  • @Ludz (Comment 2) :

    Only because he was injured…

He didn’t exactly come out of nowhere, after he had a BIG U20 World Champs.
