Lions pick B side for Bulls clash

Butch James will lead the Lions onto the Coca Cola Park pitch on Saturday evening as coach Johan Ackermann has named a significantly weakened side to face the Blue Bulls.

With second place on the log sewn up – and very little hope of retaking top spot given the Sharks expected victory over Griquas – Ackermann seems determined to propel the Bulls into the fourth play-off spot and a meeting with the Sharks in Durban a week later.

Ackermann has left out Jaco Taute, Franco van der Merwe, Baywatch Grobbelaar, JC van Rensburg and Andries Coetzee, while including Bok squad members Elton Jantjies and Lionel Mapoe on the bench. Patric Cillers will start at tighthead prop, with Bok veteran CJ van der Linde set to start on the other side.

15 Ruan Combrinck, 14 Deon Helberg, 13 Deon van Rensburg, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Anthony Volmink, 10 Butch James (capt.), 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Willie Britz, 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Jaco Kriel, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Michael Rhodes, 3 Pat Cilliers, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 CJ van der Linde.
Replacements: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Paul Willemse, 19 Warren Whiteley, 20 Whestley Moolman, 21 Elton Jantjies, 22 Lionel Mapoe

  • One wonders what the side will look like should the sharks manage to lose to the griquas Friday night? Will Johan rethink his strategy, try for the win, and secure a possible home final?

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 12) : Lions Dont need to pick a A-team to beat the bulls and Sharks would have done the same if they weren’t scared of the Lions at cocacola park they just wanna secure 1st place. We can rest our star players and be fresh for the play-off’s and who knows….
