Lions coach Johan Ackermann has named his side to face Western Province in this weekend’s Currie Cup semi-final at Coca-Cola Park. Last week’s captain, Butch James, loses his spot in the run-on side as one of a slew of changes to the outfit the suffered a hammering against the Bulls last week.

Ackermann has been able to reunite what is arguably his strongest halfback pair, with fit-again Michael Bondesio and Elton Jantjies preferred to Ross Cronje and James respectively. both of the latter players will be on the bench this week, along with Deon Helberg, who’s replaced at right wing by Ruan Combrinck. Andries Coetzee comes back in at fullback, the position in which Combrinck played last, while Jaco Taute replaces Deon van Rensburg at 13 and will partner either Alwyn Hollenbach, or Dylan des Fountain should the former not pass a late fitness test. Anthony Volminck in jersey 11, is the only backline player guaranteed to start in the same position as last week.

Up front, JC van Rensburg returns to lead the side, with Jacobie Adriaanse joining him in the front row. One of CJ van der Linde or Pat Cilliers will be the reserve prop, again depending on the former’s fitness. It speaks volumes for the esteem in which Ackermann holds both van Rensburg and Adriaanse that he’ll pick them ahead of his two Bok props. At lock, Franco van der Merwe returns to join Micheal Rhodes, while Warren Whiteley and Baywatch Grobbelaar start in the back row, ahead of Derick Minnie and Willie Britz. Minnie makes the bench, along with Hendrik Roodt, while the likes of Britz and Paul Willemse are not quite so fortunate.

Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Jaco Taute, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach/ Dylan des Fountain, 11 Anthony Volmink, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Jaco Kriel, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Michael Rhodes, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg (captain)

Substitutes: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 CJ van der Linde/Pat Cilliers, 18 Hendrik Roodt, 19 Derick Minnie, 20 Ross Cronje, 21 Butch James, 22 Deon Helberg

  • I think they should have stuck Butch at inside centre for this match.

His experience and influence could make all the difference, especially playing opposite Jean de Villiers

  • Good point Rich.

Butch at 12 would have been a good call.

  • Lions gonna miss Mapoe. He has been very good the last half dozen games he has played.

  • It would have been interesting to see Butch at 12 and Mapoe at 13, THEN maybe have Tuate at wing ?He adds a bit of size and kicking ability to the back 3

Also would have liked to see Derick Minnie start with Jaco Kriel

  • I still think the Lions will want this more than the Weepee and by pure guts & determination might just sneak this one

  • Think they have missed a trick here. Butch at 12 would have been the call for me. I may even have tampered with the idea of leaving him at 10. Knock out rugby, kicking for the corners etc. Nobody does it better than him.

  • @Amateur (Comment 6) : I would rather have kept him at 10 than played him at 12. I don’t feel he adds anything as a 12.

  • Tend to agree with you here. Quite frankly I would have tried to get Butch back to the Sharks this year. He would have suited the style played by the Sharks. His distribution is top drawer and with Jordaan etc outside of him it could have been explosive. Not sure how long he still has to play but with Lambie and him for next years S15 I wouldnt be too concerned about 10.

  • Very strong side and what is so nice to see is all the youngsters in the team…. We (the LIONS) Should take this one seeing that it is at CCP and with Jantjies at 10 we surely can expect the LIONS to play good running rugby. Good to see Kriel can keep his place ahead of Minni. Kriel had a brilliant game against the Bulls and Minni can come and take all the ball when WP is tired. LIONS to take it 33-18. GO THE LIONS.

  • Don’t think lions will beat weepee on Saturday. Sharks vs bulls going to be hard, just hope Sharks play as they did in super 15 semis.
