Springbok centre Jaque Fourie wants to play for the Springboks at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and has hinted that he will return to South Africa in the year of the World Cup to fight for his place in the squad.

Fourie spoke to the Keo.co.za website and told them that he has plans to represent the Boks again, but would like to stay in Japan for the next three years, before making a return to South Africa to get a place in the World Cup squad.

Fourie is widely regarded as the best outside centre South Africa have at their disposal, but that statement has to come into question if you consider the level of opposition face for three years. On the positive side, his body will be fresher than any player in South Africa considering that they only play 20 games a season.

Fourie would fit in nicely with the current Springbok setup, outside either Jean de Villiers or Frans Steyn, but I get the feeling that a few outside centres will put up their hands in the next two seasons, which would make Fourie’s return a bit more difficult.

  • I fear Jaque might get soft up in Japan.

  • If he wants to fight for his place for 2015 he should come back before then. Too many good young outside centres coming through and all of them will be faster than Jaque in 2015.

Unless he comes back sooner I don’t see him challenging for a place.

  • i would like to see him at least play in the european leagues rather than the japs. They are a tougher league than the asian leagues

  • So he believes himself to be such a phenom that he merely needs to stroll into a SR team in 2015, and all will fall at his feet begging him to once again rule as master over the lowly Springbok backline?

Yeah, that sounds like the self loving Jaque (my parents couldn’t spell my name) Fourie we all know.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 5) : got to say I agree with you.

I’m not overflowing with love for Mossie at the moment.

  • Well he has made his statement, but I would agree with the sentiments that there will be better centres by then, say perhaps a Frans Steyn, Tim Whitehead combo… Centres ideally should play for the same home union to create and maintain that cerebral partnership. Tim Horan & Jason Little. Walter Little & Frank Bunce. Hennie Le Roux & Japie Mulder. JDV and Mossie… All great pairs, all past tense. I look forward to seeing everyone fit next season, as the combos will definitely change at Bok level. JDV is IMHO not a long term player at Bok level, and dare I say the Schalk Burger…
