The first of two very important games for both the Cheetahs and the EP Kings, as the Cheetahs fight to stay in the Currie Cup Premier Division, while the Kings fight to prove they have what it takes to compete in the top division after winning the B Division.

The Cheetahs have had to change their team as a result of injuries, but can count on captain Adriaan Strauss to lead them into battle, while the ever exciting Sarel Pretorius will be evident on attack.

As for the Kings, they have to change their captain for the second time this season, after injuries to both Luke Watson and Darron Nell last weekend, with centre Wayne Stevens taking over the role. A tough away encounter will have them on the back foot in this promotion/relegation battle, but they know they have their home leg still to come to make up for any deficiencies tonight.

Free State Cheetahs: 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Nico Scheepers, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Phillip van der Walt, 7 Pieter Labuschagne, 6 Hendro Scholtz, 5 Izak van der Merwe, 4 Francois Uys, 3 Ross Geldenhuys, 2 Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1 Marcel van der Merwe.

Replacements: 16 Hercu Liebenberg, 17 Schalk van der Merwe, 18 Carl Wegner, 19 Davon Raubenheimer, 20 Tewis du Bruyn, 21 Phillip Snyman, 22 Rayno Benjamin.

Eastern Province Kings: 15 SP Marais, 14 Paul Perez, 13 Wayne Stevens (captain), 12 Shane Gates, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Wesley Dunlop, 9 Falie Oelschig, 8 Cornell Du Preez, 7 Wimpie van der Walt, 6 Devin Oosthuizen, 5 David Bullbring, 4 Reynier Bernardo, 3 Clint Newland, 2 Hannes Franklin, 1 Jaco Engels.

Replacements: 16 Frank Herne, 17 Andre Schlechter, 18 Wayne van Heerden, 19 Mpho Mbiyozo, 20 Scott Mathie, 21 George Whitehead, 22 Norman Nelson.

Date: Friday, October 19
Venue: Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein
Kick-off: 19.10 (18.10 GMT)
Referee: Jonathan Kaplan
Assistant referees: Lesego Legoete, Rasta Rasivhenge
TMO: Gerrie Coetzee

  • I have no problem with the Kings (I actually want them in the cc) but I do have a problem with them in next years superugby, firstly they are not ready yet and have been set up to fail miserably, secondly the lions didn’t deserve to get dropped ,this that the kings won’t do any worse than the lions (dit is n k@k siening) if you replace something you replace it with something better and at the momment I don’t think the kings will do any better than the lions

The Kings won’t win a match, so they will be worse than the Lions. They played a Cheetahs side without Luke Watson and their star signings, but the Cheetahs were without Johan Goosen, Heinrich Brussow ect. The Cheetahs were almost full strength during the Currie Cup and they ended last. The Kings will be a Vodacom Cup team with some Super Rugby experience playing against a teams with mostly international experience. I have nothing against the Kings, but they haven’t worked their way up the ranks. They just sat back and waited for a handout. That’s the problem I have.

  • Ag tog, so Cheetah land will feel that there’s nothing wrong with their administration and continue on the exact course that they’ve been on.

And sadly the Kings just never really looked like anything.

So it is a lose-lose situation for rugby in South Africa.

The gap between 1st division and premier division is still worryingly vast.

  • Don’t know who is these 13 players they have lost? Even so the Cheethas are playing terrible rugby at the moment. Their defence is bad and their attacking play is shocking. But they still gave the kings a hiding. If it was a CC game, it would have been a nother loss for the Cheeters.

  • @BR (Comment 81) : you see this is wher you are WRONG! Super rugby is NOT the showcase of SA’s best, it is NOT in Australia. in as much as the is a competitive side to it, super rugby has developmental imperatives which is how Australia got to include both the Force and Rebels in the competition from ZERO base – meanining there were NO teams, NO precedents, NO structures to build from but SANZAR approved both those franchises based on POWERPOINT presentations!

SARU has SIX franchises in SA and FIVE super rugby franchise spots – conundrum! ALL SARU affiliated franchises DESERVE to play in Super rugby because none are more equal than the other! Yes some are more established, wealthier but none “deserve” to be in the competition more than the other!

rid yourself of that inane notion!

as previously mentioned the Spears had legal right to play Super rugby but because of the corrupt former Natal rugby president Oregan Hoskins, they were ‘gangstered” out of the competition for SEVEN years!

Seven years where the Lions did NOTHING but extend the level of INCOMPETENCE a saffa franchise can reach.

  • @BR (Comment 91) : like Natal should’ve played for their promotion into Currie Cup all those years ago, something they never gained on their own…ok

  • Can we at least give the Kings a chance? They ARE going to lose a lot of games, but I´m willing to bet they´ll show a lot more balls than the Lions ever did.

What irks me most is that there are going to be a lot of people, who are going to cream their best panties out of the sheer joy of watching the Kings lose. Even against the likes of the Rebels or the Blues.

Sure, people hate the Watsons, but get over it FFS!

  • @Megatron (Comment 92) : I remember us playing promotion-relegation games and getting beaten by Northern Freestate for a stint in the B-Section. Best thing that ever happened to Natal Rugby.

I see you´ve been reading a lot of the so-called “traditional powerhouse union” supporters´s posts on Keo.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 95) :  it’s got nothing to do with Keo or the “traditional powerhouse” nonsense but everything to do with developing RUGBY in this country, look where KZN rugby is now and ask yourself if that decision to “bump them up” was a wrong one from SARFU?

  • @Megatron (Comment 92) : they should have been included in the cc since they first made a bid (that would have helped developed them throwing them in at the deepside may just do more bad than good), I just hate it when someone get somethimg without doing anything to justify why they should get it, i will suport the kings next year, im just not happy with the way they got in and i don’t think they are ready for it yet also sa rugby can only benefit from a strong franchise in the ec, so good luck for next year

  • @BR (Comment 97) : that was all up to SARU and not the Kings, if you recall the Spears sued SARU for not allowing then to play Currie Cup and THEN for barring them from playing Super rugby. if you have any issues happily lodge them with SARU and thanks in advance for your support.

  • @BR (Comment 97) : sometimes you’ve got to do things top down. Super Rugby draws top players to a region… top players breed a culture of success, which then helps drive development. You can’t expect to be successful starting from nowhere with a completely bottom-up approach against established competitors.

Forget the fact that we got “bumped”. The fact that we had to go back to the B-Section woke up the powers that were to the fact that you need to keep on deserving your status in an elevated division.

It´s a good thing for SA rugby. So I agree with you.

  • @robdylan (Comment 99) : i get what you are saying , but i still believe they should have been in the cc first to try and secure a place for longer than a year in the sr ( seriously what can they do in just one year to me it seems if saru have set them up to fail)

but this is my issue. So much hatred is being directed at Cheeky and the Kings, when I believe that the real culprits are the muppets at SARU who have effectively given everyone the worst of both worlds here.

IF the Kings had been gauranteed a 2-year stay in Super Rugby and if the decision had been made at the time it was supposed to be made (i.e. early in the year), I firmly believe that the Kings would have been able to contract a far stronger squad for next year than the one they’re now saddled with.

  • as for Cheeky, whatever you may think of the man personally, at least he’s had the balls to stand up to them and hasn’t backed down… and has steadfastly refused to be “bought off”.
