The 31st person on the field for this weekend’s Currie Cup final at Mr Price Kings Park will be Jaco Peyper, after being named to take charge of his first final.

Andre Watson, SARU’s General Manager of Referees, said that the appointment was made purely on merit and based on feedback from the provinces during the season.

  • Peyper has an unfortunate knack of missing distinctly forward passes that set up Gio Aplon tries. The only refereeing appointment that would have been worse for the Sharks would have been Louwrens van der Merwe, who seems totally awestruck by Western Province players and intent on being their buddy. You could see his irises become heart-shaped whenever he smiled at Duane Vermeulen. It was nauseating.

Rasta has performed dismally whenever he’s run the touch line in Sharks’ matches; hard to forget his awful job during the Super 15 where he allowed the Cheetah’s to score a try when their player had clearly been tackled into touch: http://www.sharksworld.co.za/2012/05/21/rasta-are-you-blind/

Why are these three being rewarded? They had some of the worst performances of all the officials during this season. I guess rugby’s governing bodies love irony – like Bryce Lawrence receiving the prize for being New Zealand’s best referee for 2011.

Jason Jafta is probably the best referee we have, outside of Craig Joubert. He knows his laws, he is authoritarian when he needs to be and doesn’t seem to get much wrong. He pulled a death stare the other weekend on a player for misconduct after the whistle, which had me in stitches, but seemed to be quite effective, even against a much, much bigger man.

I promise I’m not always negative!

  • @MerckZ (Comment 3) : Well said!! As for the ‘Death Stare’ I replayed it three times and collapsed each time!! I think it was super effective cos nobody heard from that player again!! Worked better than a penalty!!
