Western Province coach Allister Coetzee has made some changes to his team that will take on the Sharks in the Currie Cup final this weekend, with the biggest change coming in midfield.

Marcel Brache, who was vice captain at stages in the Currie Cup campaign, has been dropped to the bench in favour of Damian de Allende who forms a partnership with Juan de Jongh in midfield in the absence of Jean de Villiers.

That is the only change from the team that beat the Lions with a last gasp try in the second semi-final last weekend. Joe Pietersen will again feature from the bench as Gerhard van den Heever, Bryan Habana and Gio Aplon remain the back trio.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : I think I saw him play the Blue Bulls earlier in the season. He looked pretty sharp. A slippery customer with a decent turn of speed.

  • Plum’s going to have a struggle picking a Sharks side that’s weaker than this in almost any position!! It will obviously be a hard game, but if the Sharks pitch, there’s no reason why they should lose to this side.

  • @CDRhino (Comment 3) : They’ll lose if they think all they need to do is pitch!

And this WP has enough danger players and experience heads to take any team.

The Sharks will be favourites until they start thinking that they are, then we can expect an implosion.

They’ll have to be damn sharp to win only their 7th Currie Cup trophy ever. It’s never easy winning a final.

  • De Allende looked pretty sharpish when he came on against the Lions. Good decision by AC to play him ahead of Brache.

I think the youngster can expect a lot of Deysel, Coetzee and Alberts traffic to come his and Catrakilis´s way.

  • @Letgo (Comment 5) : That is why it is extremely important to have a mental coach in the team. To keep the players in check. They are only favorites once they have the trophy in their hands celebrating.

  • Many of the players have been in finals before – so they should know favourite and underdog tags count for nothing. Fortunately the core of the team has been playing finals rugby in the S15 since the last league game.

My only slight worry is our 2 hookers who hopefully won’t allow the occasion to get the better of them.

  • @Letgo (Comment 5) : Sorry for the misunderstanding, when I said they needed to pitch, I meant as in play to their ability, not just get to the ground. WP definitely has some quality players and a number of promising youngsters. What I was saying is that, from 1 to 22, I believe the Sharks have got a better player in almost every position and thus, should they play to potential, they’ll have a hard time losing to this WP team.

  • @CDRhino (Comment 16) : Thanks for clearing that I. I don’t need to see over confidence from any Sharks fan right now, because that’s the one thing that could hurt us this weekend.
