Previously in Shark Wars: While braaiing at the final of Hotgrub Cup, Shark Lionchaser blacked out and had a vision in which he saw the future unfold for talented young Booter Tap Repus… In a further vision he saw Repus lifting the FantasticFifteen trophy at a packed Emperor’s Field stadium, wearing the No 10 shirt while agents of the dark side gathered to put an end to Repus’s promising career… We rejoin our heroes now a season down the line…

(If you want a recap, search for Shark Wars in the search dingus at the top right of the screen…)

The transition from apprentice to full master of the Boot had not been easy for young Tap Repus and had been full of setbacks. His destiny beckoned and yet the agents of the dark side of the Boot thwarted him at every turn… Shark Lionchaser quietly reflected that the time since he had identified Tap as the saviour of the Boot and the Chosen One had flown too quickly. His visions of glory in the FantasticFifteen competition had yet to come true, and Repus’s true calling had yet to come knocking at destiny’s door…
The Great Whites had indeed made the final of the FantasticFifteen, but Repus had been injured towards the end of the competition, forcing coach Odi Tum Seplummtriee to play Gaulstonean Froth Froggle in Repus’s beloved No 10 shirt. Little did he know that the injury to Repus was part of a plan by the evil Lords of the Pith who had tried to lure Froggle over to their ranks. He had resisted the temptation to go over to the dark side of the Boot and had left the Great Whites at the end of the FantasticFifteen to return to Gaulstone.
What had happened to their plans, Lionchaser mused? And to the joint plan of Suplummtriee and his assistant coaches Huge Head Forwards and Graaff Bustforth to shield Repus from the attentions of the resurgent Pith?
A new Pith leader had emerged from the shadows to stand by the side of evil Lord Daft Mornay Stain and his apprentice, Beltum Tramcheese, a leader whose powers were considerable and far-reaching and who threatened everything Repus had achieved… Hymen MineAcher, coach of the Saffrika All Stars by day, evil master of the dark side of the Boot at any other time and a man determined to extinguish the light that surrounded Tap Repus.
Determined to be Repus’s undoing, MineAcher had mind-moulded Seplummtriee into playing Repus at 15 and had selected him to the All Stars in that position, relegating him to the bench where Repus had had to watch Kane Worsener, MineAcher’s ally, take to the field ahead of him and Daft Mornay Stain wear the No 10 shirt.
And then there was a new dark apprentice, Lionchaser reminded himself. One more powerful than Tramcheese… Gigham Loosem, MineAcher’s favourite, had been promoted above his station and before his time to the All Stars.
Loosem’s powers were strong, but uncontrolled, thought Lionchaser. And power like that left in an unbridled state would eventually be the dark young apprentice’s undoing. But in the meantime he remained a serious threat and would have to be closely watched… Lionchaser’s thoughts returned to Repus, who had eventually been released from the All Stars to return to contest the final stages of the Hotgrub Cup where Seplumtriee, free from the mind mould that MineAcher had infected him with, had given him the No 10 jersey to once more make his own. Repus had shone brilliantly, and the Boot had been strong in him, raising him above the darkness that had surrounded him for most of the season… For once, it seemed, the Pith had been taken out.
But this morning’s news that Repus was to once more join the All Stars for the tour to Grande Pommeland, where they would play the Oiresh in Dudbin, the Hamish in the Hamishrealm capital of MacBorough and the Pomme in their fortress stadium of Thickingspam before returning home to the Southlands of Saffrika had Lionchaser worried. Lionchaser HAD to get on the tour to help protect Repus from the forces of darkness which were soon to surround him again… But how? He calmed his mind and opened it fully to the power of the Boot and waited for the answer to come…

Away in the locker rooms of Emperor’s field, Tap Repus carefully folded his belongings, preparing to put them away until next season. The bitterness of the Hotgrub Cup final loss to the Western Ponces remained like a sour taste in his mouth. He wondered if the Pith had had a hand in the defeat? Trusting no-one, he suspected that Pith agents had infiltrated the Ponces, relying on the simple mindedness of some Ponce players to allow them to control their every move.
He tried to still his mind and prepare for the coming tour to Pommeland, all too aware that MindAcher and his henchmen would be similarly preparing, concocting their evil machinations in advance. He could see it in his mind ‘s eye, Worsener in the 15 shirt and Stain in the 10, him sat on the bench, unable to move or breathe, desperate to escape the cloying grip of the dark side of the Boot, determined to vanquish the evil forces surrounding him…
Suddenly something shifted imperceptibly in the Boot and he felt a presence, a presence he had not known in some time… Lionchaser, his second cousin twice removed on his mother’s side and mentor… A voice he knew came to him over the Boot and all around him the Mini De Loreans seemed to effuse with light. The power of the Boot was all encompassing, all knowing and without beginning or end.
“Tap…” said the voice he now recognised as Lionchaser’s. “You must prepare for the battle to come… MineAcher will try to win you over by promising you the No 10 starting position, but don’t listen to him, don’t believe in him, don’t trust him… Use the Boot, it will not let you down… You are the only hope, the only one… Find yourself in the Boot…”
But another voice, more faint than Lionchaser’s, came to him now, one he thought familiar, somehow…
“Tap… You are not alone, there is… another… A sister…”
“SISTER?” Lionchaser’s voice overwhelmed the shakier, fainter one and Tap reeled as he waited for the Boot to reveal to him who might hold the key to his future wellbeing… Did he have a sister?
“No, Tap…” The voice was fainter still but still distinct enough to be heard, or rather felt by the young flyhalf. “A Secret Sister of the Order of the Boot… will… reveal…. herself…….”
Suddenly the room was still. Lionchaser’s voice was gone as was the eerily familiar faint but stirring one which had accompanied it. Who was she, Tap wondered? When would she reveal herself? How would she save him from MineAcher and his Pith minions?
He finished his packing in silent contemplation.
Away to the west Lionchaser was disturbed. How had he not seen that a Secret Sister was waiting in the wings? He vowed to track her down…
Not far from where Lionchaser made this vow a woman felt a subtle shifting in the balance of the Boot and knew that her time was approaching fast… Karma Gilbertine looked out of the window and smiled as her life’s purpose approached, and as she did so, it seemed that the Boot smiled with her…

  • @Shaz (Comment 1) : Have you heard that the reason Butch is coming back is because HM has asked Plumtree to play Lambie at 15 in the S15?

  • Back off Sandy you beyotch! If the last standing tree on my property falls on my house (making three in the last t 15 months), I am either going to be really angry or dead! It is a really big oak tree and very close to my house.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 14) : Thank you Pokkel. So far so good, I still even have power and internet! Worst still to come though, and this is a big one (not strength but area affected). Wind will not come down until Wednesday morning. The spread of this storm is around 1600 KMs, and the barometric pressure in the eye of this one is lower than any storm in recorded history. She wasn’t invited, but she is coming!

  • Very weird how this is so similar to the Perfect Storm (of movie fame). Huge hurricane, and two winter or Clipper storms all combining. We already have an offshore casualty, the HMS Bounty (built in 1962 for the Marlin Brando epic Mutiny on the Bounty), foundered off the coast of North Carolina, crew abandoned ship (far too early in my opinion). 14 of the 16 crew rescued by Coast Guard helicopters, 2 still missing. Rescue was carried out in 40 foot seas (very short wavelength in the Gulf Stream) with winds gusting to Hurricane force (70 knots). How in the world those helicopter pilots can maintain a position in those winds and sea state (just 50 to 100 feet) above the waves, to lower a basket right to a survival raft is freaking amazing, not to mention the rescue swimmers that dive into the water in those conditions to coordinate the rescue. Sorry for the language, but these guys have balls of steel to go along with unbelievable skills.

I’m sure if they had not pursued a true hero’s career, they would make some spectacular Rugby players! ;-)
