South African Football giants Kaizer Chiefs has put together a rugby team to enter the NBM Sevens Premier League tournament in December to be held in George. The team will play in the colours of the football team and is a first in South African Rugby and Football circles.

Supersport.com reports that the football team has put together a star studded team of people to run with this idea with the main goal being to win the extraordinary R1 million prize money for winning the tournament.

The team is set to be coached by ex-Sharks and Western Province centre Gcobani Bobo while the playing captain is the surprise package of the entire announcement in Breyton Paulse.

The tournament is set to feature all the South African Super Rugby franchises as well as six corporate teams, who may well rope in some international stars like Shane Williams and potentially even Quade Cooper.

The idea of Kaizer Chiefs getting involved with rugby is to bridge the gap between sports supporters in South Africa and bring something completely different to the table.

  • This is a brilliant idea. Not sure if Breyton still has it in him to last a sevens tournament, but a great way to spread rugby into other markets.

  • Good luck Breyton.

Funny thing, my dad always said he will support any team playing against the Bulls, even Kaizer Chiefs. Guess I’ll get to see if he meant that

  • Excellent idea. Great initiative. Others soccer teams should follow suit. Will be huge in developing rugby amongst “non-followers”. And I think SARU should invest in this. It will do much more for the development of the sport than any other programs. If the interest gets joggled, who knows who might be promoted to the S15 ;)

Just don’t think breyton will cut it.
