Yet another South African lock has packed his bags to look for greener pastures elsewhere, after a fourth Cheetahs lock has decided to head north to France.

According to Sport24.com Carl Wegner, who played in the second row as well as on the side of the scrum during the Currie Cup, has signed a contract with Stade Francais.

Izak van der Merwe (Edinburgh), George Earle (Llanelli Scarlets) and Frikkie Spies have all signed contracts with Northern Hemisphere clubs, leaving the lock stock in Bloemfontein rather scarce.

Wegner played in the second row with Eben Etzebeth for the Baby Boks last year, but it was his performance in the Varsity Shield which got the attention of the French, with Carl deciding to further his career in France rather than accepting the two year contract from the Cheetahs.

  • The Cheetahs are in big trouble. Their player retention is utterly disastrous!!

I am starting to think that they may well prop up the Super Rugby table with the Kings..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : I cannot understand what the problem could be at the union though? Do the players think the Cheetahs aren’t getting a good enough look into by the Springbok setup?

I doubt that – look at Coenie and Adriaan both getting a look in, and now young Rhule as well.

The atmosphere within the team might be a bit off? They have crept under the radar of the entire Kings/Lions situation – yet they have been playing the worst rugby of all..

  • Don’t kid yourself; its all about money. They just don’t pay too well in Bloem by all accounts.

This isn’t very different from the past; the only difference now is the Free Staters are travelling a wee bit further.

That is a big surprise, and a shame!

I though Chris looked like a good option for the Sharks in two year’s time or so – slowly taking over from Jacques Botes..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : so did i Rich,i was shattered,NO FETCHER?? he is the prefect fetcher, short, strong as an ox,watched him at school a few times turn ball 3 ,4 times a game, boggles my mind, that is why i say sharks are holding onto their money to much, our young sides can get into the semis but dont have the guns to win a semi or for that matter a final, because we dont have enough high caliber contracted youngsters,we seem to have the leftovers, bar one or two,Rob sorry, will try clear it with players i know of.
