Bakkies on stand-by as well

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has confirmed that Bakkies Botha is also on stand-by for the End-of-year Tour to Europe, along with Marco Wentzel, as reported earlier in the week.

Meyer was quoted as saying that both players will be called up should an injury arise, adding that he would not play any of the locks out of position if an injury forced his hand.

Meyer said that playing a lock out of position might cause set-piece problems and even though he would like to play Eben Etzebeth and Flip van der Merwe together, the team requires a five-lock to make sure the lineouts go according to plan.

This means that either Etzebeth or van der Merwe can expect to play off the bench, with Juandre Kruger or Franco van der Merwe starting in the five jersey.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 3) : Elstadt  you must be kidding me.

The most deserving locks in this country ;Etzebeth and Bresler. Least deserving ;Juandre Kruger and Andries Bekker.

Meyer wont select Bresler because that would mean his original estimation of him would be incorrect ,Meyer doesn’t have the humility to do that.

Jake White was called back in 2006 (I think)to face the music, wonder if Meyer will be held to the same standards? Or are there to many Bull supporters sitting in the backrooms of the SARU rugby offices ?

  • @Pokkel (Comment 9) : We need a ditrtracker/A Team so that fringe players like Arno Botha and Raymond Rhule (neither of whom has performed consistently at Super Rugby level) as well as Bresler can train with the Bok squad, experience the culture and learn what it takes to be a Bok. The coaches can also work with them and monitor them in the team structure.

  • No Sharks lock should get near the Springbok team, as they, with their coaches, were not able to get even close to up to standard in the line-outs for either the Currie Cup or Super Rugby.

If Bresler, or who ever else that played for the Sharks this year thinks it is because of the coaches, then they should go to a different union if they are to stand a chance of making the Bok team.

You can’t select a player that at times during the season was part of a line-out that was about 60% effective…or maybe even less. Seriously, stop with the Bresler should be a Bok nonsense, I’m not even sure he should be a Shark if the line-outs will continue like this with him there!!!!

I had to survive the entire match with a WP supporter, behind me, everytime there was a line out, yelling yay a line out, no matter whose throw it was, and a Sharks supporter next to me everytime we had a line out praying “we need a miracle” Not good enough!

Victor Matfield might have popped up in the backline way too often instead of attending rucks but it was his lineout prowess that ensured his starting place in Bok teams and very few would dispute his contributions to the team.

  • Bresler is the BEST lock we have had since Johan Muller/Ackerman era. I know the birds will chirp “Mostert” but I would like to spray those birds with a flamethrower  -all reputation and fickle fan hearsay ,had he stayed on longer ,maybe.

On form neither Juandre Kruger nor Bekker deserve to be part of the Bok outfit, they are players that Meyer has either earmarked from his previous endeavors with the Bulls(Like Arno Botha)or that fits his profile for players to suit his game plan. The non-selection of players like Bresler encapsulates what is rotten with Springbok Rugby; that being our failure to recognize areas outside of pragmatic percentages “safe” rugby. Bresler ,JDJ and Heinrich Brussow will fall victim to Meyers backwards thinking, non progressive and conservative approach to rugby. This doesn’t mean I am anti percentage Rugby , in fact I advocate it ,in circumstance where it is appropriate.

In one game our execution was awful, something punishable by Springbok non-selection? Either ,hypocritical on Meyers part for playing players such as Morne Steyn and countless others & then not selecting some deserved ,or he has the Rugby understanding of a baboon.

Just a thought ,Bresler has been the hardest hitting forward in South African Rugby this year and consistently one of the busiest defenders.

  • Etzebeth should continue his career as a 5-lock when Andries Bekker calls it a day – or start giving him game time there next year during the Super 15 already.

Will be nice having a guy who plays like a 4 but still brings the aerial skills.

Alongside Elstadt, or even Quinn Roux when he returns. Also got a number of very good locks coming through, so we’re set for a while.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 33) : I agree! That’s what I said above. Elstadt has mongrel in spades and was the best 4 lock in SA last year.

If not for his injury at the beginning of this year he’d be a Bok and not Etzebeth. They’d be unstoppable together and both are young!

Matfield must be hired to work with Bresler on his lineout skills. Roux, Bresler, Elstadt and Etzebeth are the 4 with the potential to go to the next WC and PSDT as well depending on whether he plays flank or lock.

Can’t agree with Bresler. I just don’t rate the guy. For me, anyone who thinks he’s anything above average is watching a highlight-reel specifically made to make him look good.

I do think Flip vd Merwe is good enough to make it also. Was impressed with him this season. If he continues not running around giving stupid penalties and keeps his head down, he’ll be an excellent option in future.

Agree with you about everything else though. Juandre Kruger has 3 games that will define his career. If he doesn’t step it up big time, he needs to go. Can’t see Andries Bekker continuing on for much longer as a Bok either with his constant injury troubles & on-and-off performances.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 37) : so you think his work rate and tackle count are average too?

Maybe the problem with your “highlights reel” approach to rugby is that sometimes you miss the full picture. A 5 lock will take, on average, 4-5 lineout balls a game. Sure, it’s a big part of his job, but it’s not the only part.

Jake White is on record (somewhere on here if you dig into the archives) as saying that Victor and Bakies compliment each other perfectly as Bakkies does the cleaning and rucking and Victor does the carries and other stuff. That actually also affected who JW chose to replace bakkies when he was unavailable, because he didn’t want him replaced with a lock who played simlar to Matfield.

I like Jandre Marais as a lock and think if he is given a chance he could be very good, but both him and Bresler is very poor in line out play.
Having other option at line out does not excuse a lock from doing his work. If both our lock is weak line out options other teams will know to cover Keegan and Kanko and we will strugle to get line out ball.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 50) : The fact that they complimented each other has nothing to do with their individual work rates. It refers to the balance of the pack at set piece.

My point is you don’t need a specialist 4 and 5 .People are unfairly stereotyping Bresler as a poor line-out jumper when he is not a specialist 4 or 5, and based on his perceived poor line-out capabilities, should be excluded from Springbok selection.

I hope you’d select Lambie over Steyn ;some would argue Steyns kicking is better than Lambies so therefor we should select Steyn, same principle applies-in SA we have many place kickers and many line-out options -effectiveness in open play should be perceived to be as important as set piece accuracy, not to say Bresler is a poor line-out option.

@JD (Comment 51) : How could you find fault with our locks alone? Funny because I thought Burden and Coopers throwing has been abysmal and Etzebeth was incredible on the day. Having options doesn’t mean that a lock should be excused from his line-out duties . I’m battling to express what I mean ,so ill use an analogy ; Bresler at one stage was the only player in our forward pack above 194/5 often competing with teams ,such as the Stormers ,with a number of players taller than 194, so who would have the advantage ?The team with more competitors.

  • @Talent (Comment 52) : I know that the fault for our line outs is not just with the locks. Yes hookers are also to blame.
What needs to happen in the off season is some really hard choices needs to be made – we NEED a lock to step up to being line out anchor and if that lock is imported franco than so be it and yes the hookers need to step up as well all (three of them) and if they can’t we need to get a hooker who can.
Sharks was very lucky to get as far as they did this year with their very very poor line out, don’t think they will be as lucky next year. Time for sentimental selection is over – pick players who CAN do the job!

@JD (Comment 55) : What is getting the Job done ?and why does a lock have to be the line-out anchor ? Kanko did it well this year and at one point our line-outs were the most innovative and efficient in the country.

  • @Talent (Comment 56) : because like you said in comment 52 the team with more competetors will win more line outs and Sharks can’t go into a season with all their line out hopes only on Kanko. If Kanko is out we need another player to do the work. Atleast one of the locks that play must be a factor come line out time.
“Getting the job done” is winning 80% of own line outs. Who ever is to blame for the poor performance this year needs to shape up or go. Would any team be at ease with only winning 30% of scrum balls? surely not so why be satisfied with only 30% line out ball?

  • @Here be dragons (Comment 59) : Our hookers have always been poor at throwing in ,even Bismarck went through a stage where he couldn’t find his jumpers.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 58) : standing off every ruck screaming at the halfback to pass me the ball

If that’s what you think Bresler does, then you’ve clearly never watched him play.

  • @Here be dragons (Comment 59) : ja, and we had issues with Skeate at 5, issues with Hargreaves at 5 – hell, even issues with Muller at 5. So while blaming Bresler, who some have rightly pointed out is not a 5 by preference, is suddenly de rigeur, I feel that the problems may actually be more deep-seated than that.

  • @JD (Comment 57) : Whose to say Bresler isn’t competent at line-outs? Being the only player in the Sharks back row above 195 means he is a marked man.

Hypothetically if Bresler was the 2nd line-out option in a team with Etzebeth ,Burger ,Smith & Spies how do you think he may cope?
    This debate would be irrelevant.

So for some to say “no Sharks lock should ever be considered for Springbok selection” shows me they don’t understand how a line-out works.

As a unit the Stormers annihilated us at line-outs. Their lifters ensured their jumpers got in front of ours, their best jumper competed heavily at the front and our hooker ,being rusty & never really the best thrower around, made for disastrous line-outs.

Breslers strength is his work-rate and high impact tackles. It would be interesting to see how much yardage he has let past the point of contact this season, in comparison to other South Afircan forwards…

  • Juandre Kruger let an Aus prop drag him 20 meters down the touch line to score a try. Would Bresler let that happen?

  • @Letgo (Comment 12) : 100% agree. Our lineout is sh!t. Cost us the CC. Select guys that can do the basics. If Monde is that person, so be it. Please, no more Burden.

  • Everyone is trying to find the problem with our lineouts, Hookers are blamed, Locks are blamed, but nobody has mentioned a third, and extremely important cog in the lineout machine, namely the supporters or lifters. I have made a similar post several times in the past.

This is just my opinion, but I feel that there is a problem with the coaching of the lineout. I think our Hookers throw just fine, and I think our jumpers jump just fine, and catch the ball just fine. The problem is the jumpers are not being lifted and supported. I saw several lineouts last week where the throw was a good one and sailed over the jumpers head. Look closely at these lost lineouts and you will see that our jumper had very little support. Also, the problems at the front of the lineout is because our lifters and jumpers are allowing the opposition to get in front of them. The front of the lineout is a lower throw, and is all about timing, allowing the oppo to compete at the front is a matter of poor technique and timing, hence I blame the coaching. Sykes ran the lineouts last week like he had one foot in PE already.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 66) : Sharks played four hookers this CC season, and with each there were lineout problems. To blame Burden is very naive, especially since he missed so much of the CC while carrying tacklebags for the Boks. In fact, you may not be naive, but rather nuts.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 67) : so missing the lien out by 5m and almost throwing a ball to the flyhalf (not once but twice) is no problem? Sorry that is basics for any hooker! Sharks have problems with their line outs and no amount of talk will make it go away.
@Talent (Comment 64) : If Bresler is a no 4 lock then he must play as a 4 and Plum must pick a line out guru at 5!!!!!!!
With the current poor line out Sharks will not make any playoff games next year. All the teams will be all over our line out! Plum needs to pick to lock that can do the work loke matfield and bakkies, currently we playing with 2 bakkies and zero matfield.

  • @JD (Comment 70) :
Bresler was moved to 5 to accomodate PSDT in the super15 mate
Also, really now??? Thats a bit far fetched, easpecially with Kanko and Bissie coming back next year.
Maybe Plumtree shouldve have given PSDT a run in the CC when he got fit again…

Why do we need a number 4 and a number 5?
Do locks have to be enforcers /jumpers? No
