Following an interesting day of rumours as to whom exactly will be the 32nd player in Heyneke Meyer’s touring squad for the End of year Tour; it is believed that the name of Heinke van der Merwe has come to the fore.

Initial reports indicated that the player was called up to the squad, but in actual fact, the player is only on stand-by should something go wrong with the current props available.

Heinke van der Merwe, who played for the Lions before moving to Leinster, has one test cap to his name after being selected to go on the End of year tour in 2009. Van der Merwe’s duty as stand-by player comes after Brian Mujati could not be included as a result of passport issues.

  • Can anyone explain why a loose head prop replaces Mujati as a back up? Why not give BJ Botha a call? Super 14 final, World Cup medal, years of experience in Ireland…
