Lindeque confirms Tukkies move

Sharks under 21 utility back Piet Lindeque is on his way to play for Tukkies in the Varsity Cup.

The former Grey College and SA Schools star was a major coup for the Sharks Academy, when they snapped him up back in 2010. Lindeque was earmarked to be fast-tracked into the senior side in his first year out of school, however, for reasons that have never been adequately explained, that idea was shelved, with the player going on to play a starring role for the Sharks under 19 side in 2010.

He’s been with the under 21 and Vodacom Cup sides for the last two years, with a move to wing ahead of this season’s under 21 campaign appearing to rejuvenate his career to an extent, which appeared to have stalled.

Lindeque becomes the third member of the Sharks under 21 “class of 2012″ to leave the union, with prop Nick Schonert and flank Chris Cloete also on their way, according to our information. Lindeque has made his move public, though, tweeting “On my way to Pretoria, start of a new journey really looking forward to it!!#TuksofNiks”.

We’d like to wish him the best for his future in Pretoria.

  • @Argex (Comment 1) : sad loss this… you have to wonder whether better coaching mightn’t have saved him for us?

  • Varsity Cup is a great breeding ground for young players, the Sharks may have a World class academy, but the players get much more exposure at varsity cup.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 4) : we lose a lot of guys to Tuks… and then Tuks lose a lot of those guys to the Pumas after one season of Varsity Cup. I’m still not all that convinced.

  • Varsity Cup is very popular not only amongst students but the general public aswell, stadiums are packed and that’s what the players want, you perform well at Varsity level you have a better chance off getting drafted into the senior sides.

  • @Mutley (Comment 6) : yes, exactly. Just ask Jerome Pretorius. He had no difficulty being drafted into the Pumas senior side based on a good Varsity Cup campaign for Tuks last year.

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) :

We used to have the same problem at Maties.

One year we lost 13 out of 15 of the victorious u/21 jongspan.

It happens. Guys want and need success and recognition immediately and the window is a small one.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 8) : I agree with you.

Piet wasn’t going to feature in the Super Rugby side this year and clearly saw better chances of progression via Tuks than via the Sharks XV. Sometimes a change of scenery does wonders too. No hard feelings, really, wish him all the best. Just always a shame when such a highly-rated schoolboy doesn’t quite come off.

Should perhaps serve as a warning to those who measure “potential” on schoolboy achievements alone, but I’m sure it won’t.

    Agree completely Rob.

Funny thing is there is an u/18 and u/21 side every year. By virtue of the plain fact that the average professional career is maybe ten years, it means 1 out of 10 of those schoolboys will make it. This doesnt even take into account guys that make it but that have never played representative at age group level.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : He has huge potential! It could be coaching, but I think the fact that we brought Whitehead in and Jordaan made the huge step up, probably culled his chances totally. As with probably Williams, Mjekevu and Meyer as well! And now we have Steyn back. I know you can’t let everyone play, but its still sad to have someone who has fought through the structures with us, leave.

  • Yip Rob… we do know where Schonert is headed but once again it goes back to the way that the youngsters are treated……however for game time Schonert had no option but to make a move…I think we will watch with interest

  • IMO good move Piet – rather get some decent game time and exposure than be jerked around for a couple of years only to be dumped at a later stage for a hasbeen – a favourite Sharks move. He together with the other 2 will be missed. I hope to see them pop up in the Currie Cup next year and prove me right – now that will get my heart racing!

  • Think Schonert jumped the gun a bit. Jannie and Beast excluded the props at the Sharks did not do anything for me and next year Schonert could have played some super 15 and Currie cup rugby. On the other side don’t think Lindeque had no other option but to move as Sharks have lots of centres and wings ahead of him. Good luck to all of them.

  • I can understand Lindeque moving since he has to compete with Mvovo, Pietersen, Ndungane, Sithole, Viljoen/Ludik and Jordaan (to a lesser extend) for the wing positions. Cloete has to compete with Deysel, Alberts, Coetzee and Stander… That’s also just too much.

Schonert is the odd one out. He definitely had a shot at playing serious minutes next year. Herbst is the only player making a real contribution among the young props, with Chadwick being inconsistent at best. Allan Dell is one to watch, but he alone does not give us all the depth we need. Schonert should have stayed put a bit longer but maybe the promotion of Dell during the Currie Cup pushed him over the edge.

  • Somebody previously mentioned that Maritzburg College guys strive to play for the Bulls. I think Schonert is a College old boy, so presume he is packing for Pretoria. Matfield being appointed as their attacking coach probably swung it for him.

  • you guys shouldn’t assume that youngsters opt to move on of their own accord. Often it’s a case of the Sharks simply not offering them a senior contract…

I made absolutely no statements in the article to suggest one or the other.

I don’t know whether Lindeque was offered a contract, but I know that the other two weren’t.

  • @robdylan (Comment 26) : Hmmmmm.
This will be an ongoing problem, losing promising players who dont crack a senior contract and Im sure at the moment, with a strong, settled squad, such contracts will be few and far between.

Those are 3 good guys that are moving on, I really hope they all crack the big time some time or other. I thought Lindeque, had a particularly good under 21 campaign.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 29) : ja, that’s exactly the thing. I mean, it would be awesome to retain the entire u21 squad each year, but there simply aren’t enough places for them to play – not unless you’ve got a whole team’s worth of senior moving on each year, which is also far from ideal.

  • I think some of the decisions re player retention are political….how do u explain the investment in a player from U/16 level..makes the sa u/20 side..a dedicated talented player..then there is no room in the inn…They say there are four tightheads ..Jannie,Wors,Julian..then Nick Schonert..but if i look at hookers..Bismark,Burden,Cooper then Hadebe..all signed but no room for Schonert..come on whats the game..who is fooling who?Good luck Nick Schonert…
