Lions shuffle deck-chairs as Mitchell edges towards exit

According to reports on Twitter, John Mitchell has terminated his contract with the Lions.

It seems like a bit of an interesting “middle finger” is being shown by the former All Black coach, after having his name dragged through the mud by the GLRU, only to be exonerated on all charges that led to his suspension almost 6 months back. Persistent rumours of a role with Sale appear to be well-founded and the latest shenanigan will apparently see Mitchell act in a consultant role for both the Sale Sharks and the Lions.

The big winner here, I’m sure, is Virgin Atlantic.

It is further alleged that Johan Ackermann will now be confirmed as Lions head coach, with Mitchell on hand to assist him. Kind of. When he’s not too busy with other stuff. Erm…

  • Mitchel is probably not the greatest coach around with his personality disorder (whatever you wanna call it) but as a technical consultant he must be worth his body weight in gold.

  • The Sharks have had there fair share of brain explosions throughout the years – Andy Goode being the pinnacle of these – and yet I’m still thankful that I don’t support the Lions.

If he was grumpy up till now, imagine what flying 22 hours every week will do.

  • There’s only one wee bit of information that is missing here… how much money chnaged hands in order to get him to offer his resignation?

There is no way there is no settlement and there was always no way that he would be coaching the Lions next year.

The technical adviser aspect is to save face.

  • Kees Lensing is the #1 biggest contracting disaster.
Dale Chadwick is a VERY close second? (hopefully he doesn’t actually HAVE a contract)

  • Why Kees Lensing? The guy was a monster in the scrum and chadwick is way worse than him. In any case #1 disaster must be jacques-louis potgieter with andré pretorius a very close second.

  • @JD (Comment 15) : Lensing was a monster in the scrum for the Bulls, but suddenly became very tame at the Sharks. Also, Lensing was a big name signing on a massive contract while Chadwick is probably on a much smaller “rookie” contract. I don’t think Andre Pretorius was ever on contract – he was payed game be game if I remember correctly.

  • @MysticShark (Comment 16) : sorry to say still don’t thing Lensing was as bad as you say. The way chadwick scrum he sould be on a 0/19 contract and even if andre pretorius was on a pay per play contract he was still worse than Lensing in my books as all pretorius offered the Sharks was a lot of practice for the medical staff.

  • @JD (Comment 17) :
Every one of those “disaster signings” have merit. But if you take the value-for-money concept into account, you can’t go wrong with Kees as being the worst. He was on a R1,5million per year contract if memory serves me right. How many games did he actually play for the Sharks? How long did his 3 year contract last?

Others were short term disasters. Kees was a long term disaster that became shorter :)
