Jonker calls it a day

Referee Marius Jonker has called time on his international reffing career and will no longer be available for selection for international or Super Rugby matches.

As one of SA top officiators, Jonker blew his first test in 2005 but at the age of 44 has opted to step down from the pressure – and travel demands, it would seem – that top-flight refereeing demands.

He will continue to be available for domestic rugby in South Africa, including the Vodacom and Currie Cups.

  • I must say its a bit sad, esp for me, as when he started he used to always blow our u/16 games and he was by far the best school ref we ever had. Was always nice to have a decent neutral ref instead of some school headmaster making some dodgy calls.Good luck with your future Marius.

  • Apologies for the thread hijack but just read this on the Sharks facebook page: “Assistant coach, Grant Bashford says The Sharks pre-season is “focused on conditioning at the moment and we’ll get our strategy and game plan together in the new year.”

Anyone else find this just a little troubling?

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Pity, not to take anything away from conditioning but I guess I hoped that Sharks coaching and management would have a very clear idea on game plan/strategy as first priority or am I naive in thinking game plan should influence conditioning? (honest question as I’ve never coached a rugby team)

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : no, I think conditioning is a given and is pretty much always the first thing you concentrate on.

This doesn’t mean the coaches aren’t working on strategy and game plan, though…. it just means that the players won’t be brought into that planning just yet.

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : Thanks, the approach is different to other sports I’ve been involved (mainly hockey and ultimate) but thanks for clearing it up!

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : look, I’m far from an expert here myself, but just picking up on what I’ve read in seasons gone by.

    Ultimate? Man, that’s a killer!

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Probably the most fun team sport I’ve ever played (including Rugby). Also huge fun to watch. Unfortunately is still widely considered a hippie sport  .

  • Rob your dead on the money there. Between now and the New Year the coaches are running thru every video they can find of games played this last year and putting plans together. The conditioning guys will be doing the work now, giving Bash and the others time to work out a strategy.

  • @Caratacus (Comment 9) : All they have to do is watch videos of the first half of the year and then NOT play like that.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 11) : LOL!! Hopefully they will be watching videos of the other teams playing not us!! Pinch ideas, devise anti moves to stop strategies, look for weak spots, it never finishes!!
