Sharks Sevens coach Roelof Kotze has been able to name a strong 12-man squad to participate in the inaugural NBM Premier League Sevens tournament in George next week.

While few Super Rugby squad members will participate in the tournament for any team, the Sharks benefit from the core of the side that won the SARU Inter-Provincial Sevens title a month or so back in Pretoria and have also been boosted by the inclusion of some stars from the age group teams.

Gouws Prinsloo and S’bura Sithole will share captaincy of the side, with Tera Mtembu and Milo Nqoro joining the latter as national sevens representatives. Mtembu is the only player in the squad to boast Super Rugby experience, while Sithole and Prinsloo have both been capped for the Sharks in the Currie Cup. Sizo Maseko and Jaco van Tonder both excelled for the Sharks at under 21 level this year, with fellow 15-man wingers Mzo Mbona and Anton Verster having played bit-part roles in the past for the Sharks under 21 and Sharks XV sides respectively. Tyler Fisher and Sean Robinson have been selected from the under 19 ranks, with Peet Coetzee and Calvin Karnezos, both members of the team that won at Loftus, rounding out the squad.

Sharks Sevens squad:

Tera Mtembu, Peet Coetzee, Sizo Maseko, Anton Verster, Gouws Prinsloo, Milo Ngoro, S’bura Sithole, Calvin Karnezos, Tyler Fisher, Sean Robinson, Jaco Van Tonder and Mzo Mbona.

  • I’m looking forward to this comp. It will do SA sevens a world of good.

Hopefully it’ll be a roaring success and even more international players and teams will join the stage next year.

  • Obviously the S15 players won’t be selected due to fear of injury but imagine a 7′s team like this

    Keegan
    Kanko
    JPP
    Mvovo
    Sithole
    Reinach
    Ludik
    Jordaan
    Fransie

    I would
    be a sight to behold.

  • very excited to see what Fisher can do in this form of the game. There are some concerns about his ball skills, so I’m sure a stint of sevens could be just the thing to help him in that area.
