Junior Springbok coach Dawie Theron has included six Sharks players in his latest SA Under 20 training squad, with the select group of 34 players set to gather in Cape Town next week for a training camp.

Sharks under 19 skipper Rob du Preez continues to establish himself as the de facto understudy to Handre Pollard, with only those two names included as fly halves. The Sharks are well-represented at scum half too, with Hanco Venter and Stefan Ungerer both making the latest cut. Outside centre Tyler Fisher makes up the Sharks back contingent.

Up front, prop Marne Coetzee and hooker Morne du Plessis have both been included.

Here’s the full squad, courtesy of SA:

  • Congrats to the Boys that made it, Must say I am surprised we have no Locks or Loose forwards making the grade??

I know Koegelenberg is only 18, but he was one of the Sharks U19 starts last year

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 1) : I think the problem with Koegies is that he was writing matrix during the last training camp, so got overlooked

  • 2 okes that am genuinely happy for are Rob du Preez and Cheslin Kolbe, Rob has worked extremely hard on his game and Cheslin is starting to grow into a player of quality

  • Keen to see who the Sharks U21 flyhalves will be this year, might not be as straightforward a decision as one might think

  • @HORSEFLY (Comment 9) : if that’s a way of suggesting Cope might be in the mix, I doubt it. Between Rob du Preez, Gavin Hauptfleisch and Fred Zeilinga, he’s got minimal chances of getting in

    And D.Campbell if he’s still around…
Don’t know hey, that kids got crazy talent. He is easily more naturally gifted than any of those 3 flyhalves

  • @HORSEFLY (Comment 12) : definitely, seen very little of him, but people speak very highly, an u19 player’s parent at some felt that the 1st choice flyhalf should’ve been him, so he’s definitely quite a talent

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) :
Nobody is talking him down but I just think Brendan is more talented than he is…
The main reason why Rob NEVER lost his place was because he has a contract. We all know how far that takes you especially at U19 level.
Copes ability is exceptional specially how he can liven up his backline!
Give him game time and he’ll do you wonders!

  • @HORSEFLY (Comment 18) : ask anyone who was at the SA u20 camp and they’ll tell you that Robert du Preez was among the most impressive in both camps, the mere fact that Tim Swiel has been included at fullback says a lot about how impresssive Robert has been

Just wish all flyhalves can get an equal chance, forget who’s got a contract and just try all four guys out.

  • @Horsefly – Robert was imo the outstanding 10 in 2012 at u/19 level, and after the first 2 camps in Stellenboch, don’t be surpised if he comes out 1st choice ahead of Pollard. Although they did not play together in 2012, Rob and Hanco Venter combined as if they played along each other for ages and as a combination, they stood out and surely looked the part. Your comment re contacted players getting the nod ahead of other talent is not that accurate. Inside centre Michael Bernard is contracted, but battled to get any game time in 2012. Coaches, game plans an one of the most important factors (that we the fanatic sidelined supportes)never see, commitment/attitude in the training cessions and off the field commitment, rate among the reasons why coaches prefer one player ahead to others.

  • @HORSEFLY (Comment 20) : i cant prove you right or wrong, but didnt Marcell Coetzee come to the Sharks without a contract or bursary? and he played for the senior side within his first/second year.

  • @VanWilder (Comment 23) :
listen, contracted players get an unfair advantage at u19 level and thats well known. at u21 its not the same.

Also, the Sharks only give out about 10 contracts anyways so there has to be at least 5 uncontracted players playing due to that i.e Marcel Coetzee.

    @Drifter (Comment 21) :
Dont know hey, will just have to wait and see what happens i guess. he will either prove me wrong or right
