Chadwick to miss first few weeks

News from the Sharks camp this morning is not so positive, with reports that Dale Chadwick has broken his foot. The Sharks twitter feed reports that the prop will be out for 4 to 6 weeks with a stress fracture.

Chadwick started last season’s Super Rugby campaign as the only loosehead in the squad, playing a ridiculous amount of rugby before Beast Mtawarira returned from injury. Chadwick played a decent holding role in his absence, gaining valuable experience, which showed during the Currie Cup.

Chadwick’s loss is Alan Dell’s gain, as the young prop is likely to see some bench time as the squad’s other loosehead, while Danie Mienie is likely to get a call into the squad as further cover.

The other option available to Sharks management is to look for experienced cover, and with the Lions out of Super Rugby action, a loan deal with one of their experienced players might be good for both parties.

This is the Sharks’ second front row injury concern with Bismarck du Plessis confirmed out until mid-April, with Craig Burden and Kyle Cooper likely to share the duties early in the season, with Monde Hadebe the other hooker available.

  • Bad luck Dale. Hope the recovery goes well.

Let’s hope Beast is 100s and that Dell is ready for the big time.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Dell looked good last year.

We need all 3 to be rotating ideally even if Dell only playes a minor role.

  • I’d love to borrow JC for a few weeks but I doubt the Lions would let their captain go. There must be a reason he decided to stay…. Not sure why that would change now. Reserve loosehead won’t get much gametime off the bench unless he can cover 3 as well

  • @ChrisS (Comment 1) : @robdylan (Comment 4) : According to a thread I read somewhere, JC is not interested in playing for another team at this stage.

  • Jip, Just as I replied to Ludz, Sharks are an injury away from a hiccup! Better hope Beast doesn’t get any heart flutters in the first 2 months of Super Rugby.

Dell is a promising player, but Super Rugby and Currie Cup rugby is not Junior Bok Rugby, as Chadwick found out rapido quick.

No use having a sublime backline, if they are going to be tackling all the time.

“Chadwick played a decent holding role” You must be kidding! He was horrible. Going backwards faster than an Italian tank, with 5 reverse gears, and one forward gear.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 6) : yeah Super Rugby is a whole different ball game. I think Allan knows that better than anyone, he’s in a good mental space and mentally he is very tough.

If he was a bit soft up there, then I’d be worried, he’s 21, he doesn’t have to be a superstar, if he can hold his own and feel his way in, I’ll be very happy, there’s a lot to work on, but there’s also a lot he’ll bring the party which excites me

And that applies to every single side in super rugby. However, I do believe that we have got adequate backup in most positions, which will stand us in good stead for the season.

Some young players sink with pressure, others survive. I believe that most of our youngsters are going to swim, like the champions they are!

  • My concerns would be a quality back-up loosehead. It’s a pity the Sharks couldn’t do a loan deal for JC Janse van Rensburg.
They have plenty quality loosies but no recognised fetcher.
They also really need to improve the lineouts. Hopefully with Franco there that will be addressed. The lineouts wre also good towards the end of the S15 last year when Kanko was running the show.

I hope Kanko comes back in the form he had last year.

  • @Ludz (Comment 7) : Agreed, must say, Dell impressed against the Kiwi hairbear! It will be good for SA Rugby if he can make the step up.

Agreed depth is the key, and that is why I was questioning the Sharks depth at prop, as Chadwick clearly wasn’t the answer, so it’s like with the Cheetahs locks, a question of “if’s” If Lood de Jager can make the step up, from u/21 to Super Rugby, we are a tad better off, if not we are in the dwang.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 10) : Lood was very unlucky not to be a Baby Bok last year, think the Cheetahs have a real quality young lock there. He was superb for Leopards u21 last year

  • @Ludz (Comment 11) : Yeah so I heard, I really hope he can take that a step or two higher. We are a tad thin at lock. Waltie Vermeulen was also progressing nicely, but last year he dedicated himself to getting his doctorate, and now he is avail;able again, doing his internship. Doc Jannie will attest that, that is a tough one indeed. Muller is out for most of the year, and Ferreira will miss the Australasion tour. So we are left with Uys, Vermeulen, Landman, and Lood!

  • If need be Jannie can play 1 and Wors 3 with Dell on bench. If fit Beast and Jannie will start with Wors on bench (for atleast first 3 games).

  • Chadwick is poor anyway. Not Super Rugby material. Just sign JC JvR on loan. He’s not playing at the moment anyway. I don’t count those friendlies as real matches.

And Dell can do a much better job than Chadwick if need be.
