Jonsson College Rovers have named a strong squad to compete in the inaugural Cell C Community Cup, which kicks off with a match between the reigning National Club Champions and EP’s Despatch, in Durban on Saturday.

Rovers have named a strong squad of 35 players for the tournament, with a fair few in the group who have represented the Sharks at age-group, Vodacom Cup or even Currie Cup level in the past. A viictim of their own success, to an extent, Rovers are used to having to rebuild their squad each year, as the crop of stars from National Club Champs tends to get snapped up by smaller Currie Cup provinces or Varsity Cup teams for the following season. The Community Cup offers a chance for exposure to the cream of club players in the province this year, hence an influx of talent to Rovers and the other teams taking part.

Utility back Chris Micklewood captains the side, from either flyhalf or fullback.

The full squad is below, including an indication of the highest honours each player has achieved.

  • Why did chris jordaan fall out favour? He was a speedy wing if memory serves me?

  • @shaniboi (Comment 2) : I was wondering the same thing.

What happened to guys like Goosen, Stoltz and Blignaut?

Mxoli also played SA U20 for 3 years and then disappeared :?:

  • I dont know why Mjekevu is in this squad when the Sharks are battling now with quality backup 13s.
The Mercury this morning reckons that Bosman and Joubert are backup centres but will be used as 12s.
So why even have Joubert there?
Surely with F Steyn and Bosman covering 12 you need another 13?

  • @John Galt (Comment 6) : I think your first statement holds the key here….

If the Sharks truly did consider Mjekevu the sort of quality backup they needed, I doubt he’d be languishing in the Rovers squad.

Remember that Wandi was first-choice 13 for the u21s last year – displacing Piet Lindeque to the wing. To go from starting at u21 level to not even getting a contract for Vodacom Cup says a lot, but those who watched his play at u21 level last year don’t seem surprised that it happened.

  • @JJR (Comment 8) :
I would agree with you normally regarding JPP at 13.

However, in this mornings paper, Plum says he is reluctant to play him there. Says he is wing that can attack nicely if forced to play 13 but defence is a different issue altogether.

  • @John Galt (Comment 12) : and he’s 1000% right. We got stuffed by the Canes because JP’s defensive weakness at 13 was specifically targeted and exposed.
