Former Sharks XV fullback Kobus de Kock was in scintillating for his new team, University of Johannesburg, last night, as the men in orange recorded a resounding victory over neighbours (and Varsity Cup new boys) Wits.

De Kock scored four tries in UJ’s 63-24 demolition of the home side, in a result that saw Wits manage three tries of their own, to UJ’s nine. For good measure, the fullback added six conversions for a personal tally of 32 points and a clear man of the match award; his dubious prize is the chance to wear a set of bright pink shorts when his side next takes the field, sure to clash wonderfully with the orange jersey.

The win moves UJ up to second place on the Varsity Cup log, just behind Maties, whose narrow 18-16 away win over Tuks relegated the Pretoria team to fourth. In other results, third-placed Pukke beat Ikeys 29-26, whilst NMMU continued their giant-killing exploits by defeating Shimlas 14-10, in the process moving to fifth in the standings.
