Vleis starts for Kings

They say the wheel often turns slowly, but for one player in particular, it will have come full circle this weekend. Southern Kings loose forward Jacques “Vleis” Engelbrecht will finally have his chance to start a game of Super Rugby on Saturday – against the team who came within a whisker of including him in their own squad two years back.

Engelbrecht starts at eighthman in Kings side that shows few changes from the unit that beat the Western Force in their Super Rugby opener ten days ago. Captain Luke Watson, still battling fitness, has been named on the bench, allowing Engelbrecht to start at the back of the scrum. Veteran lock Darron Nell takes over the captaincy, forcing a jersey swap for Steven Sykes (from 5 to 4) and displacing David Bullbring to the replacement bench. Dan Adongo falls out of the 22 altogether as a result.

The loss of one “foreigner” thus opens the door for another, with scrumhalf Nicolas Vergallo replacing Johan Herbst on the bench in the only change to the back division.

Kings – 15 SP Marais, 14 Marcello Sampson, 13 Ronnie Cooke, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Sergeal Petersen, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 Jacques Engelbrecht, 7 Wimpie van der Walt, 6 Cornell du Preez, 5 Darron Nell (captain), 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Kevin Buys, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Schalk Ferreira.
Subs: 16 Edgar Marutlulle, 17 Jaco Engels, 18 David Bulbring, 19 Luke Watson, 20 Nicolas Vergallo, 21 George Whitehead, 22 Hadleigh Parkes.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 1) : didn’t watch Kings v Force, did you?

We can record a bonus point win here, but going into the game expecting to win by 40 is a sure way to come home with our tails between our legs.

Naughty corner for you, until you can learn to show some respect for the opposition :)

Doesn’t matter how many foreigners they use, as long as only two are in a match day 22..

  • @Ludz (Comment 25) : welcome to Super Rugby…. winning by 15 in this competition certainly isn’t “close”.

But I get what you’re trying to say and I also think it is disrespectful and also downright dangerous to start making predictions about a big Sharks win. The guys who didn’t get their “Force by 40″ scoreline in week 1 won’t get their “Sharks by 100″ scoreline in week 3 either. I guess they’ll just have to deal with that.

  • Sharks must win this game with bonus point. If Sharks want to top SA log 10 log points against kings is a must. Winning with 20 points would also be nice and easy on our nerves.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 1) : Respect every team in Superugby, once you make statements like that, you are opening yourself up for a huge wake up call. The guys must earn the right to go wide and not treat this like a basket ball match. Us as fans would also do well by following the same principle. Those Kings played well against the Force, that’s driven bunch fighting for survival and respect.

  • I am more concerned about the coaching staff of the Kings.

A good coach can turn any SA team into a match winning machine, it was no small feat for the Kings to win their first game of SR.

The Kings showed against the Bulls that they’re not all that garbage after all, but they were guilty of that age old mistake of underestimating the opposition.

Anyone remember how close the Sharks came to losing to the Rebels the first time we played them?

On the day, anything can happen.
