They say the wheel often turns slowly, but for one player in particular, it will have come full circle this weekend. Southern Kings loose forward Jacques “Vleis” Engelbrecht will finally have his chance to start a game of Super Rugby on Saturday – against the team who came within a whisker of including him in their own squad two years back.
Engelbrecht starts at eighthman in Kings side that shows few changes from the unit that beat the Western Force in their Super Rugby opener ten days ago. Captain Luke Watson, still battling fitness, has been named on the bench, allowing Engelbrecht to start at the back of the scrum. Veteran lock Darron Nell takes over the captaincy, forcing a jersey swap for Steven Sykes (from 5 to 4) and displacing David Bullbring to the replacement bench. Dan Adongo falls out of the 22 altogether as a result.
The loss of one “foreigner” thus opens the door for another, with scrumhalf Nicolas Vergallo replacing Johan Herbst on the bench in the only change to the back division.
Kings – 15 SP Marais, 14 Marcello Sampson, 13 Ronnie Cooke, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Sergeal Petersen, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 Jacques Engelbrecht, 7 Wimpie van der Walt, 6 Cornell du Preez, 5 Darron Nell (captain), 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Kevin Buys, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Schalk Ferreira.
Subs: 16 Edgar Marutlulle, 17 Jaco Engels, 18 David Bulbring, 19 Luke Watson, 20 Nicolas Vergallo, 21 George Whitehead, 22 Hadleigh Parkes.
