Marais leads Sharks XV

Lock forward Jandre Marais leads a Sharks XV team packed with exciting youngsters, as well as Super Rugby fringe players, as they take on Border in tomorrow’s Vodacom Cup opener at Kings Park.

23-year-old Marais will reprise the role of captain that he fulfilled for much of last season, with younger brother Peet locking alongside him in a second row combination that is sure to get on well. Look out for some particularly hilarious moments in the second half, when hooker Franco Marais (who is unrelated to the brothers) takes the field.

There’s a welcome return to fitness for Monde Hadebe, who along with other fringe members of the Super Rugby squad in tighthead Allan Dell, flank Francois Kleinhans and eighthman Tera Mtembu, will start the game. That leaves Danie Mienie (from last year’s under 21s) and Brynard Stander (who played a few Currie Cup games last year) to complete a pack containing no players who haven’t at least played a season at this level before.

The backs are less experienced, but no less exciting.

Riaan Viljoen starts at fullback to add a smattering of experience, but there is no sign of Marius Joubert, who was expected to appear at outside centre. Instead, the phenomenally-talented Tyler Fisher will enjoy his first start at this level, outside a veteran of the Sharks XV in under-21 captain Heimar Williams. Blitzbok S’bura Sithole joins red-hot Sizo Maseko (who scored five tries in the last warm-up game) at wing, while Fred Zeilinga and Stefan Ungerer will play together among the halfbacks. Both have strong kicking boots, which may not need to come into play against Border, but should nevertheless prove a boon for the Sharks XV in weeks to come.

Marais (the hooker) is joined by two other Junior Springboks on the bench, in prop Maks van Dyk and flanker Khaya Majola. Making up the forward contingent is Johan “Plank” Meyer, the former Queens number 8 who was expected to be a star for the Sharks under 19s last year, before picking up a serious knee injury during the club season. Gouws Prinsloo and Hanco Venter are also on the bench and both have played plenty of rugby at this level before.

Look out, though, for young utility back Andre Esterhuizen, who will wear the number 21 jersey. Fresh out of school, he’s big, strong and fast and has been compared to our very own Frans Steyn by those who saw the great Bok play at the same age. If anyone is doubting whether to get down to watch this game, the opportunity to see this Esterhuizen kid get his first run could probably be reason enough to go!

  • Very keen to see how Esterhuizen, Johan Meyer and Maks Van Dyk go…they have the potential to become world class players; Esterhuizen will be very important going forward i believe; someone who can actually get us over the adavatage line just the same as Steyn.

Well done the Sharks recruitment team and The Sharks academy! Some great talent on show in this team.

  • Bloody good to see my former classmate back in action, tough injury last year, hopefully a great injury free season is in order. Always good to see the Queenian contingent ;)

  • @Dunx (Comment 1) : Sharks XV need to show that they believe they can…. that’s always been the problem. Never really a shortage of talent, just a crisis of confidence during the knock-outs that sees them somehow always lose.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : Hey Rob, do u or possibly Beet have the height and weight of Esterhuizen? I’ve only seen him play once and it was a little while ago now.

Stander is also a 7 that can really work with Plum’s gameplan in the future (Possibly Currie Cup)…he’s got the size and strength, but also has a workrate similar to that of Coetzee…i believe he will do very well when given his chance in the future.

  • Klerksdorp is turning into a good feeder school for us now…

Riaan Viljoen, Wors Herbst and Andre Esterhuizen are all old boys.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : Is the coaching really up to standard, how many years have Sean Everitt been coaching them and age group and still we’re not playing close to our potential.

I really believe that we do not have proper coaching material for rugby in SA. We need to get over ourselves and learn from the kiwis how it’s done.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : Cool tks…so he’s ready for Superugby ;-) Excited to see we have found a centre that can do a job similar to Steyn…Also want to see how Kubeka develops, wonder if he will be big enough to stay at centre, needs a good extra 8kg or so.

  • @JJR (Comment 11) : SA Rugby says 1.92m and 102kg.

And NO, there is more to being ready for Super Rugby than just size. We learned the hard way with Steyn that just because a player has the physical attributes to be fast-tracked, doesn’t mean he’s necessarily mentally and emotionally ready to play at that level.

PLEASE, let’s not start calling for Esterhuizen to play Super Rugby yet. It’s enough of an honour and achievement for him to be in the Vodacom group without having played age group first.

  • JJR ,no offense ,but you need to drop the size obsession because its begun to spoil your otherwise credible and knowledgeable posts.

@robdylan (Comment 16) : From what I’ve seen he is extremely tough ,his work rate is insatiable and he can step and distribute with the best of them. My only concern surrounds his temperament. Kubeka reminds me of Zimela Khoza ,just taller.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see the Du Preez brothers ,Kubeka and others come through and play for the Sharks senior side-now we just need Jessie Kriel back

  • @Talent (Comment 19) : Kriel is tainted. Bulls can keep him.

So Kubeka’s going to play outside Jean-Luc du Plessis for the under 19s, right? That could be a great attacking combo in the making. Just going to depend on what our forwards look like. We’ll have strong props, as always, but I’m not sure about the rest of the pack.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : @Talent (Comment 19) : Guys i am just kidding…it would be crazy to play him in superugby now…that’s why i put a ” ;-) ” after my comment

But i won’t lie, i have been looking for The Sharks to bring through a big 12 for a while now…no disrespect but looking at The Sharks XV combo of Williams and Joubert of last year didn’t look so good to me depth wise.

Now we will have Fisher, Kubeka and Esterhuizen…all top quality young midfielders, with a future at the top level, i believe.

Would like to see if Dawie Theron has a look at him (Esterhuizen) for the SA U/20′s this year…will be interesting.

The Sevens squad is going to take some losses with Kolbe, Senatla and Geduld all in the running for Baby Boks…wonder how the Sevens squad will look for the Sevens world cup in June.

  • @robdylan (Comment 31) : Surely Esterhuizen can play 12?…and i’m happy we have more outsides, Jordaan is the only player in our Superugby squad that is an out and out 13,imo. Whitehead misses a lot of side on tackles when he plays 13 from what i have seen.

I also think Kubeka will be more effective at 13, he has got the speed and is not really a great distributor, and at 82-85kg currently i don’t think he is made for 12, imo.

All i can say is i’m very happy with the youth players the Sharks have contracted the last 1-3 years.

  • Bloody good team there, some great prospects.
Hope we see a few in the full team sometime this season. (Certainly Viljoen and Marais will feature).

We could really do with some scrumhalf depth, how old is Ungerer?
