Keegan probable starter

If I read the situation correctly at this afternoon’s press conference the chances are good that Keegan Daniel will be returning to the Sharks starting line-up and taking over the captaincy from stand in captain Frans Steyn. John Plumtree did not say anything for certain, he only said that Keegan was running with the team this morning and if he is ready that he would start. Plumtree was questioned whether he would bring in someone from the Sharks XV, but did not see the need before he realized that with Botes’ injury he would indeed need someone to cover on the bench.

If Keegan was doubtful though, it would seem that the coach should already have two Sharks XV players training with the squad. This is if Pieter-Steph du Toit would not be considered to cover this position until some of the injured players returned, but Plumtree indicated that he would leave the youngster at lock, as he feels he needs time in one position to grow.

This will be the first time since the season started that Plumtree will be forced to make a change to his 22, but he also indicated that he might be making one or two unforced changes in the backs. Who that might be or whether it would be positional changes was unclear, but considering that Cobus Reinach has been one of the players who has been struggling for form or at least playing in patches and especially struggling with the speed of the game and getting to the breakdowns, my bet is the experienced Charl McLeod might get his first start of the season this week. Who the second player in that one or two will be, is anyone’s guess.

  • Mvovo did have that niggle that led to an early substitution, so it might be that he is rested to recover fully before getting injured later in the season.

  • I’m no expert but rotation needs to happen or players are going to lose match fitness and get rusty. Practice and gym is fine, but to a point.I agree that Charl needs a start and it would be no bad thing to start Odwa with Mvovo on the bench.

  • Nice that our stand in captain can hand over a 3 from 3 record to our returning captain. Well done Frans, I know nobody, including you are satisfied with the way the Sharks played, but 3 wins are 3 wins.

  • Gotta say, FS did a stellar job as a captain, he has 100% record, 5 out of 5 nice. Also good to know we have a good backup. Hope KD is over his injury.

  • I am actually very worried about Pat, he is really playing one dimensional at the moment. I really hope that if McLeod plays he will be his old self.

  • @Uli (Comment 19) : I am not sure why you reckon he plays one dimensional. He tries creative kicks, he passes, he made a drop, he attacked the line himself, he defended, he contested and secured rucks… I am not sure that there is anything else that he can do? I suppose he can throw the ball around like Elton and Morne recently did but then he too would have intercept tries against his name.

  • Hmmmm rushing Keegan back after a layoff smacks of desperation on the coach’s part.

  • @King Shark (Comment 20) : Look , I never said he did nothing on the field. But he hasn’t been the Pat that we all know. Wait and see when McLeod is on the field and start seeing him work wonders again. Reinach is just not in the same mold as McLeod, even though McLeod is not perfect, he really gives our backs go forward ball. Ja he might try to hard here and there. but in reality is he give Pat the space to be creative.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 21) : 4 injuries in one position justifies a little desperation.

If Keegan was running with the team and is fit, the only problem with his selection would be that he may not be that match fit, but that’s better than picking a player up from the XV that has never player Super Rugby before.

I hope he passes the fitness test.

  • @King Shark (Comment 29) : That is why I can’t understand that their fans aren’t up in arms when they lose, but resort to making excuses, because they clearly possess the ability to murder most opposition teams.

Get a proper coach and administration and they’ll be a very successful team.

  • @King Shark (Comment 29) : Cheers for that. I actually expected a better performance from the Cheetahs, but not a win, especilly not such a big win.

I reckon the Cheetahs will play as well. Before injuries derailed them, they were pretty consistent last year against overseas teams, never losing by more than 7, and winning quite a few, mostly at home. They beat Canes, and Rebesl away, and beat Waratahs at home.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 30) : One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. Likewise, what you see as excuses, we see as looking for reasons for a defeat.

Consistency is the key, and by implication continuity. The thing that trips the Cheetahs up most of the time is quality depth and experience. Most of the championship winning teams have had players with immense experience and have mostly had teams that have been together for a good few years.

Cheetahs have had only one year, where they haven’t lost at least 6 experienced players. You see the difference between a reason and an excuse?

Then the factors that cause this don’t have easy solutions. Finance being the biggest obstacle. Now you will be quick to say the Cheetahs must be more adept at marketing tralalala. Thing is, Bloemfontein and Durban are like chalk and cheese when it comes to economic viability.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 33) : Agreed, the Waratahs have made quite a few changes, but we have beaten them two years in a row now, and I think the Cheetahs are more settled. Of course having players like Coeinei and Brüssow coming on as impact players also helps.

Still the Cheetahs will need to be on top of their game.

Key will be that Strauss, Goosen and Lappies get over their injuries/flu and do what they did against the Highlanders.
