Sharks prop Julian Redelinghuys has been named on the bench for the Lions this weekend, as part of an extended squad to take on French Top 14 stragglers Mont-de-Marsan.
Redelinghuys, a Joburg native who won SA Schools selection whilst playing for Krugersdorp’s Monument, joined the Sharks Academy straight after school and went on to represent the Junior Springboks – the highlight of a glittering junior career in Durban. His progress at senior level, though, has been hampered by a succession of injuries which always seemed to strike just at the time when he was poised for a breakthrough. In the three years that he has been amongst the senior squad, Julian has managed to amass fewer than 10 caps at Currie Cup level – and around the same number in the Vodacom Cup – as he has struggled for game time behind the likes of Jannie du Plessis and Wiehahn Herbst.
It’s unclear at this stage what the terms of his move to the Lions are. I’m lead to believe that it’s currently a loan move, but I’m sure, given the surplus of propping options in Durban, that the player would be given a release should he ask for one. The stint in Joburg, thus, should probably be seen as more of a trial than a loan.
We’d like to wish Julian all the best in whatever the future holds.
