Further injury concerns for the Sharks

In addition to Jannie du Plessis, who has been battling a knee injury, the Sharks have confirmed that lock Anton Bresler and fullback Louis Ludik are also in doubt for this weekend’s clash against the Melbourne Rebels.

Bresler and Ludik both sustained shoulder injuries during Saturday’s bruising clash against the Brumbies and coach John Plumtree yesterday confirmed that neither has yet taken part in practice this week. The coach was quick to point out, though, that none of the three appears to be seriously injured at this stage, meaning all may yet come into selection contention if their condition improves during the week.

The coach has hinted at changes in any case, though and with injury taken into account, it wouldn’t be altogether surprising if Wiehahn Herbst and Pieter-Steph du Toit come in for du Plessis and Bresler respectively. Amongst the backs, the option exists to shift the misfiring Frans Steyn to fullback and give Meyer Bosman a run at inside centre.

The Sharks team should be confirmed tomorrow.

  • Jannie du Plessis battled in the first half and was replaced at half-time but his injury prognosis – like the rest of the team – doesn’t appear to be too serious. “We’re hoping he will be alright. He has a haemotoma on the thigh but it’s fortunately not structural damage and hopefully he’ll be able to take part in some training later in the week.

  • If Ludik is out it would be a blow but the way the tighties performed against the Brumbies some changes were going to be made in any case. I’d really like to see Jandre Marais given a chance to show what he can do. Played a blinder for the Sharks XV against Border and they won against province too although I didn’t see the game.

  • I still think Lambie should be playing at fullback, I might be wrong but he doesn’t get our backline going… He is awesome and safe at the back.

Steyn should play at 12, but Plum needs to change the game plan. Steyn bashes every single time, how predictable!

We can’t call for Bosman to start, how desperate have we become to call for him. We back at old place with Oupa Terblanche and Bosman

Our missing link is a quality 10, that can create something from nothing. Not all fly-halves get excellent ball, but some of them are quality 10′s and make it happen.

With our backs we should score 4 tries every game, 11 Mvovo, 14 JP, 13 Jordaan, maybe 15 Lambie.

We also have one of the best packs in Super Rugby at the moment, so we should get good ball for our backs to perform.

Obviously Plum was out done by Jake, not difficult to see on our game on Saturday. The problem is that we didn’t even look like scoring against the Stormers or the Kings. If Jake coached us, we would beat the Brumbies by 30

  • @Christo (Comment 4) : Sacriledge! The Sharks faithful will have you tarred and feathered for daring to mention that Lambie isn’t the expansive 10 they claim.

Besides, who else will the Sharks play at 10, that will be an improvement. You have one of the best packs on paper, but ubfortunately, as the brumbies so clearly proved, the game isn’t played on paper.

I don’t know the answer, but I do know thatprior to the season commencing, none here would even have entertained the suggestion of the Sharks losing to the Rebels!

  • @Greg (Comment 3) : PSDT should be promoted to the starting lineup and Marais on the bench.

@Christo (Comment 4) : Lambie should stay at flyhalf. The problems with the backline will not be fixed by changing the flyhalf. Even Carter would look average for the Sharks at 10 because the attacking options the team gives him is poor (lack of decent coaching IMO). Lambie just needs to keep playing like he tried in the second half against the Brumbies.

Bosman is actually not that bad – he distributes better than Steyn. His defense has also improved a lot.

If Ludik is out we could try Odwa at 15 (although he has not done it at S15 level before I think) or bring in Viljoen from the Vodacom squad.

Steyn looks a bit slow for 15 at the moment – he really needs to shed another 5 kilos urgently. I would probably keep him at 12 myself.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 5) : Tough one, don’t get me wrong I am a big fan of Pat Lambie! No other options available at 10, just my observation.

@Bokhoring (Comment 6) : Wouldn’t play Odwa at 15, maybe Viljoen will come in. I also think 90% comes down to coaching issues. Jake proved that, he doesn’t have the best team on paper, but they are well coached

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 6) : I was thinking of Marais replacing Bresler at lock, give PSDT the ball-carrier role and let Marcel Coetzee have a rest on the bench.
No way should Odwa be allowed anywhere near the 15 jersey! a straight swap for Viljoen if Ludik isn’t available. IMO ;-)

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 10) : Very good player who does some superb things…. unfortunately most simply cannot see past the shocker he and JLP had against the Crusaders in London.

  • Its such a pity that some of our rugby players can do the worst things on a rugby field, but tomorrow its fine again. But a player like Bosman, who I think is a very good rugby player with skills, passes, can kick and a lot more, can do nothing wrong on a rugby field. Give him a fair change. He played very good rugby last year. Robdylan, how long will you remember that past shocker? forever – no my friend, its only a game

  • We might find those changes will improve the team.

Cooper in as well IMO. Bosman is a good player with a beautiful pass and Frans is not yet fully match fit. A move to 15 may help.

  • Cooper is a player who doesn’t leave anything out on the field, gives it 100% every game. I’d rather have 15 players willing to put their bodies on the line for the jersey than big name ‘stars’ who look disinterested mostly. wouldn’t mind seeing Frans Steyn getting his fitness back playing in the VC. not going to happen of course, but still think he needs to show he deserves his place in the team.

  • @Greg (Comment 17) : They should have put Frans on a serious conditioning program at the start of the season. The guy needs to shed some kilos – he is way too slow at the moment.
