Sharks XV keep up the momentum

Vodacom Cup flyhalf Fred Zeilinga once again underlined his credentials, as the Sharks XV recorded yet another close, but significant, win on Saturday. Zeilinga’s goal-kicking and all-round play were a big factor in the side’s 34-33 win over Free State at Kings Park on Saturday afternoon.

In a see-sawing game between two evenly-matched sides, the Sharks XV never established any sort of a comfortable lead and it was only a missed conversion by Free State’s Tewis de Bruyn that enabled the hosts to take a two-point advantage into the half-time break, after each side has managed two tries. For the Sharks XV, Sizo Maseko opened the scoring after Zeilinga and de Bruyn had traded penalties. Free State then scored twice, before Zeilinga himself added the full seven points to give his side a 20-18 lead.

The visitors scored first after the break, with de Bruyn again missing the conversion in the tricky wind. Another penalty – after two more misses – saw the Sharks starring down the barrel of a 6-point defeat with less than a quarter of the game to play. They again showed a lot of character, though, to score twice in the final ten minutes, once through wing S’bura Sithole, then again through hooker Franco Marais, with Zeilinga nailing both conversions. With the bonus point – and the win – already in the bag, Free State’s consolation try right at the death could only secure them two bonus points.

Zeilinga extended his lead at the top of the individual points-scoring table and the Sharks VX likewise now enjoy a 3-point buffer at the top of the South Section log.

Sharks XV – Tries: Sizo Maseko, Fred Zeilinga, S’bura Sithole, Franco Marais; Conversions: Zeilinga(4); Penalties: Zeilinga(2)
Free State XV – Tries: Rossouw de Klerk, Joubert Engelbrecht, Elandre Huggett, Freddie Ngoza: Conversions: Tewis de Bruyn (2); Penalties: De Bruyn (3)

  • What’s going to become of fred? I mean he can’t play vodacom cup rugby for the rest of his career. Or is he young enough to still play under21 and so on?

  • Was disappointed to see an old hasbeen like Joubert displace the impressive Tyler Fisher at 13. I hear this kid is the real deal – what is the take on this kid?

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : They may be, but that Fred has got some class. A game now and then wont do him or the team any harm.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 10) : hey look – if it were up to me, Fred would start and finish the Currie Cup season as Sharks flyhalf. That boy has class written ALL OVER HIM

  • @Saffex (Comment 9) : I am a BIG Tyler fan…. Big, strong, fast and knows his way to the tryline like few others. I’ve heard there are concerns about his defence and option-taking, but man, you can’t complain about his try-scoring records at any level he’s played at.

As for Marius, well… I’m told the team responds well to his presence.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Old Marius actually had a pretty decent game over the weekend.

Whenever the FS guys ran at him, they not only got tackled but the ball was turned over by him.

I’m no fan of his and before the game I was looking at his frail old body  thinking “what you still doing there old man”….then he showed me.

  • @robdylan thanks for the insight. Wonder what the issue is with defence, you with think a big strong guy having played 13 most his life would be a handy defender.

I would imagine option taking concerns at 13, would amount to him trying too much on his own?

I have read that he is a real talent, but have not seen him play given I live in the UK. By all accounts he should make the Baby Bok side so should see him in action in a few months time.

  • Hey Rob, don’t think viljoen is a good 10. Bosman could be good if given the chance but will play 12 in currie cup as Steyn will be with the bokke. Hope Ludik will also be with the bokke then Fred can play 10 for Sharks.

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : If it is on supersport then it is being streamed on some site some where I guarantee you. I more often watch sport online then I do on the TV so the Sharks XV would have definitely been streamed as it was on SS HD1.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 30) : yes and yes.

I must say, it’s a testament to how good Fred is that even in the South Section, where teams don’t get the 100-point-gimme victories over VerreNoord, he’s still top of the points-scoring table.
