Deysel, Whitehead set for return

Sharks assistant coach Hugh Reece-Edwards has confirmed that two currently-injured players are expected to return to fitness in time for the side’s next Super Rugby outing, against the Crusaders in ten days’ time.

Centre Tim Whitehead, who was expected to play a big role in midfield for the Sharks, suffered an unfortunate forearm fracture during the first pre-season warm-up game, whilst flanker Jean Deysel injured an ankle in the 4th-round clash with the Southern Kings, after impressing with his play in the opening weeks. Both now appear to have recovered from their respective ailments and are expected to be fit for selection after this weekend’s bye.

The Sharks have struggled a little for creativity in midfield without Whitehead, with Frans Steyn dishing up some rather uninspiring play at inside centre initially, before ceding the jersey to Meyer Bosman, who did far better last week. Certainly it was felt by many that Whitehead was one of the key ingredients in a back division that really clicked at times last year and it would be understandable if the coaches opt to reintroduce him as soon as they can.

Deysel’s return will be even more welcome, particularly given the injury cloud currently hanging over Marcell Coetzee. The young Bok, who started in the number 7 jersey against the Rebels, has a suspected concussion and while Ryan Kankowski played out of his socks as a make-shift blindsider as replacement, one feels that the coaches would want to pick a specialist in that jersey for the crunch game against the men from Canterbury.

  • Any idea of how long Alberts still going to be out?

  • I’m not sure it’s a good idea to rush back Whitehead. Perhaps better to give a Vodacom Cup game first?

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : very concerning, but like you said the other day, his style of play will always bring injuries. Hope Butch makes it back in time. Got a feeling he has one or two special games in a black jersey left in him

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 4) : funny you say that, because my feeling is just the opposite. I reckon with every additional week that Butch mysteriously remains “injured”, it becomes more likely that he’ll retire without pulling on a jersey again.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Shoulder injuries take forever to recover from. Have had two in my life. Standard is 6 weeks in a slung, 6 weeks to recover after that and then still get back to match fitness. Have a feeling well see him back in time for Currie Cup

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 8) : you know I’m a bit of a fatalistic bastard at times, right? I was very disappointed that Vic toured with the Boks last year when I KNEW his shoulder wasn’t right. I get very negative when a player just disappears due to an injury…. that shoulder of his just won’t seem come right

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : ok, maybe its the romantic in me, but it is too sad to think of Butch James just fading away…I want him to burn out :!:

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 6) : Actually I watched a bit a French T14 action a few weeks ago in the gym. There were some really slick back line moves and incredible handling.

  • I reckon Bosman provides decent backup for either 10 or 12. I doubt that Butch will see much action in the S15 regardless of him being injured – unless we have serious injuries in the midfield.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : I think he had so much pressure from HM to tour. If he didn’t tour he would lose his Bok jersey. Now he probably has because he won’t be able to get back by the incoming tour.

  • Let big Vic rest and heal!!! Start with Botes Kanko and Keegan and play Deysel last 20 to run at them.

  • Really looking forward to deysel’s return. The match against the Brumbies showed just how much we missed him. Without Bissie and Deysel in the team we don’t really have a player that can steal opposition ball.

  • @jonnow (Comment 16) : let’s not underestimate exactly how crap the Rebels forwards are.

That Botes-Daniel-Kankowski trio has been tried many times before against stronger teams and it never works

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : I agree, I had a look at some highlights and the Rebels are pathetic, I recon the Kinds are going to beat them.
