In an update to our earlier story, Sharksworld can exclusively confirm that Jandre Marais will indeed head to France later this year.

Sharks Commercial Director Rudolf Straeuli has confirmed that Marais will be released to join Union Bordeaux Bègles, but adds that the exact timing of the release is yet to be established.

  • Good luck to him. Young enough to benefit from a season or 2 in Franc.

  • Interesting move. Hopefully he comes back in three years in amazing shape. Would be terrible to lose him to the French.

  • Sad news indeed, he is the fourth young lock we have lost in the past 12 months. Its getting out of hand.

Quinn Roux, Carl Wegner, Ettienne Oosthuizen and now Marais.

No doubt Jandre Marais younger brother Peet will be next on the list, another promising youngster

I wouldn’t be surprised if Peet leaves soon too.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) :

Peet wont stick around if Plum fails to use him. His brother will be telling him to pack it in and join him in France. I think its poor that Plum and the Sharks family did not invest in Jandre. I dont get what the Sharks see in Franco…..Jandre has done the hard graft through the ranks only to be ignored at the expense of a player who to be honest has shown very little all S15.

We saw the same happen to Quinn Roux at the Stormers – I just cant comprehend the choices made by these coaches – it makes no sense to me. Jandre over Franco is a no brainer, much like Roux was a no brainer over Steenkamp

  • Massive loss. I was very skeptical of v/d Merwe. He is around 30, right? Marais is low 20s, a much brighter future.
I would have rather invested in the Marais brothers and PSdT.
Hope we tie Peet and Pieter-Steph down. They are better option long term than v/d Merwe and Bresler.

Rightly so. You need at least one grizzled veteran in the second row. Locks dont usually hit their stride until their mid-20s. Are you really comfortable with a pairing of PSDT and Marais at this stage?

I think its at least a season too early.

You need to start stamping your feet bud.

I must admit I was suspicious a few weeks back when I noticed that Jandre Marais was not included in the S15 squad on the Sharks website.

I asked the question and was informed it was just a mistake which they rectified after my query. I also questioned some of their player profile stats which were way out of date or just completely incorrect in the first place.

To their credit they responded and corrected them

  • @Big Fish (Comment 13) : Wrong, you dont just play players for experience sake, when they add very little value on the field. Marais and PSDT would have been a far better combo – they would have added clout

  • I have to say that I, too, was surprised at the Franco call-up. We have a good few youngsters who could do the thing. But that’s my not so humble opinion.

  • Straeuli should send Mr van der Merwe up to France instead. I don’t think the French would mind: they like purchasing players in their twilight years in anycase.

  • Once again the Sharks getting it wrong. Investing in hasbeens and letting the good young talent go. Is there no position for Plumtree of Straeuli in France?

  • This is a loss for the Sharks. It’s not as if we’re blessed with an overflowing resource of locks. I also didn’t really get the purchase of van der Merwe. Would rather have given this guy a chance following his his performance in last years CC.

  • Bad loss. Great talent, hard player. And showed excellent commitment when given a chance.

Obviously Rudolf and Plum see something different than what I’m seeing…. :!: :?:

this is going to make Franco very comfortable… He might just play even shitter rugby because now he knows he’s safe

  • Jandre Marais is better than bresler and vd merwe but he never got a chance, last year he got dropped for sykes and now he can’t even get into the match 22. Good luck Jandre hope you don’t decide to rather play for France than SA. The Sharks will miss you even if the powers that be is to daft to know it!!!!!

  • I think this is silly, why Bash Franco for one of our youngsters leaving. Franco is with us on loan, not for ever so why does age matter? He has come in and improved our line outs massively and yet that’s not good enough? I know these are silly status but they the only 1s I have lol, Franco was the highest scoring lock on the Fantasy league, for two seasons!!! :P now if a youngster does not have it in him to work for a spot in the team he must leave, its not plums fault, I don’t understand you people who want young players stuck in at every position just because they young. No! In the toughest rugby competition in the world you use your best players!! And stick in youngsters when you have injuries. If your best plays just happen to be you then bonus (PSDT) but not every one is as good at that guy, and some players have to build with age and experience until they are good enough. Just because sharksworld readers “rate” a player does not mean that plum is blind, I promise he knows who is good enough and who isn’t a lot more then any of us!

  • Not good news at all as he’s an exceptionally promising young lock. The biggest concern is that in all likelihood, he won’t return and will end up committing to France rather than the Boks. Would love to see him back at the Sharks in 2 or 3 years with some French top 14 experience under his belt!

  • @Seth101 (Comment 24) :

What nonsense, the line-out has been no better and Franco adds nothing in general play – do you ever see him with ball in hand on the charge or making tackles. I have seen him miss a few tackles this year. He is hardly a big unit so adds no grunt in the engine room. The guy has been a passenger all season.

You miss the point, Marais has been overlooked this season in favour of a very average lock who is on loan and never amounted to much. The consequences of him being overlooked is that he has sought greener pastures…….all because the Sharks management failed to look after and invest in their own.

  • @Saffex (Comment 28) : Do we even know for certain that the reason Mr Marais is leaving is because of a lack of game time? Maybe I missed something, but at this point its pure speculation that he’s leaving because the Sharks aren’t giving him gametime.

Look at Bryan Habana – all the game time in the world yet he is still going to France (for the moola). Maybe Marais is being offered more than he is down here. In our various occupances if we were offered the chance of earning more we’d probably take it. Also, if it meant we could travel and experience a different culture we might also consider it.

Furthermore, Marais may well have taken a leaf from Frans Steyn’s book. Yes Fransie may not be such a good example at the moment in term of his form for the Sharks but he’s obviously matured overseas and maybe Marais sees an opportunity for the same to happen with him.

Don’t just assume its because the Sharks management are poorly manageing their players.
