Steyn starts at fullback

The combination of some good form from Meyer Bosman in midfield, and a slight shoulder concern for Louis Ludik, sees Frans Steyn named at fullback for the Sharks as they take on the Crusaders at Kings Park on Friday evening.

Coach John Plumtree has tinkered very little with the side that hammered the Rebels in their last outing, with Steyn and Jannie du Plessis brought back into the starting lineup after being given a week to “think about things on the bench”. Du Plessis replaces Wiehahn Herbst in the only change to the starting pack; Keegan Daniel is, in other words, retained at eighthman ahead of Ryan Kankowski.

The injuries to Lwazi Mvovo and Ludik have propted a back three reshuffle. Odwa Ndungane starts at right wing, JP Pietersen moves to the left and Steyn slots in at the back. This leaves the halfback and centre combinations unchanged from the Rebels match.

Changes on the bench see Anton Bresler take over from Jandre Marais after regaining fitness, while Ludik is bracketed with S’bura Sithole in the number 22 jersey. Should Ludik cry off at captain’s practice, Sithole would be in line for his first Super Rugby cap.

Sharks:
15 Frans Steyn, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 JP Pietersen, 10 Pat Lambie, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Keegan Daniel (capt), 7 Marcell Coetzee, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Kyle Cooper, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Wiehahn Herbst, 18 Anton Bresler, 19 Ryan Kankowski, 20 Charl McLeod, 21 Riaan Viljoen, 22 Louis Ludik/S’bura Sithole

  • Good call moving Frans. Bosman is in damn good form. I know Odwa is a bit slower than he has been, but he’s a solid wing and should do well defensively and under the high ball. And I’m glad they kept Du Toit at lock.

  • Craig Burden is a few poor games short of being dropped for Hadebe who is on fire at the moment.

I think the coaches have looked at the Crusaders team and how they play and made selections based on that. Safe ,good fielding back three -quick to the ball loosies.

Odwa has proved his credentials before, but pace and attacking threat is a concern against the Crusaders.

  • Can someone please tell me what is Plum’s deal with Kanko. For the love of god we were shit without him in last years S15 – Brilliant with him.
    - best (only) loosie on the park vs Kings
    - best (only) loosie on the park vs Brumbies
    - Brilliant against the Rebels – has always combined well with Daniel.

Ray Mordt said it right (not sure where the article was) Kankowski is a great player with gamebreaking abilities – SA coaches trying to change him. and Ludik better be injured

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 16) : I think the deal with Kankowski is genuinely to manage his workload. Yes, the guy has been superb, but he also hasn’t had a break from rugby in almost a year.

I was actually pretty impressed with his showing at 7 against the Rebels, but then again, that was against the Rebels. I don’t think we can start him there against the Whitelocks, I mean Crusaders.

  • Du Toit and Cooper are going to be vital in terms of the go forward ball we get. We need to get Deysel and Alberts back. A light and fast loose trio will work against a crappy team like the Rebels; but i doubt this loose trio will be as effective against a good defensive side.

I think the Sharks should use the maul as much as possible on Friday…New Zealand teams are horrendous at defending a well structured maul.

  • That is a **** Sharks side. Ndungane is a passenger, Bosman is a liability at 12, not sure where he displayed any good form in his outing against the Rebels, he did nothing of note in a one sided romp. Franco v/d Merwe seems to have the right of passage, for how he continues to be selected is beyond me. Taking on a Saders pack with Daniel and Botes in your loose trio is just plain stupidity. There is no physicality at all.

Plumtree is clearly losing the plot. This Sharks side has no hope in hell of beating the Saders, thanks to a poor team selection by Plum

  • I’m also dissapointed to see Van Der Merwe playing so much…he has not done anything that Bresler can’t do. Van Der Merwe has been solid at line out time; but his defence and ball carrying has been below average in my opinion. Will obviously back him to play well; i just think we should back the Du Toit and Bresler combo.

You need creativity and flair at 12, the most important position in the backline…..what you dont need is average…..which is exactly what Bosman is

Bosman has one strength and that is a nice flat pass – thats where it ends. If you are happy with that as your S15 starting 12 then good for you. But dont expect the Sharks backs to dominate then

Daniel is no eigthman, his spot is 6. You dont get 100kg eighthmen playing at the highest level for a reason. Marcel moves to 8 often enough in a game and by all accounts that’s where he played at school. Lets face it, he is not a fetcher in the true sense, at 106kg he is hardly suited to playing the Alberts bruizer role at 7 – he looks perfectly suited to 8.

Played excellent VC there – got player of the year if not mistaken. Also played it at school. And played 1 game earlier this season. He’s an 8th man alright…

  • It has been a long time since Frans was really great at 15. In his current form he is way too slow for a 15. I expect Blyendaal to do a lot of clever kicking behind our wings and 15 – with some speedsters chasing.

The loss of Ludik and Mvovo is turning this into advantage Crusaders

I would have love to see a bit of bulk at 12 (Fransie), but I am by no means saying Bossie can’t do it. Let’s hope we attack and not just defend.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 70) : Yes, he was the best 12 in SA after the first two rounds of this years S15, he along with the rest of the Sharks side slipped against the Kings and Brumbies.

He was also the best test 12 we had last year, certainly better than Jean de Villiers who should have packed it in a season or two ago.

Frans is a class act and perfectly equipped to make 12 his spot. The lad has good skill and physicality to impose himself in contact and offload to his support runners. Something he executed perfectly in his first S15 game of the year

  • Botes is still the best to-the-ball player we have available, who can actually turn over or slow down opposition ball. Coetzee is not an open-side. Keegan is also pretty ineffective in that role.

Coetzee needs to not try and be an Alberts clone, and rather play his own game from 7.

Keegan’s best position is at 8, and so is Kanko’s.

Bosman is not a running threat as such, excellent distributor. In other words with him the Sharks have width…His kicking is better than Steyn’s as well so I’d rather have him there than vet Frans..

  • @Talent (Comment 81) : No Meyer sold us short in a big way. Hell we had 3 of our S15 sides in the top 5 last year and all Meyer could achieve with all that talent at his disposal was a 67% win record.

Meyer’s out dated kick and chase game plan, together with poor team selections cost us. How on earth could he select Kirchner, Jean at 13, de Jongh at 13, retain Morne at 10 for as long as he did, move Hougaard to wing and waste his talents there, select fat Guthro Steenkamp at 1, select past it CJ v/d Linde, never been Heinke v/d Merwe, Liebenberg at 2, retain the average Jeandre Kruger and invest in a player like Jaques Potgieter at flank.

No, Meyer got plenty wrong and has plenty of repair work to do this year

The guys are going to have to play out of their skins to win this one. We know they usually turn up when they are written off.

It is not quite back to the wall time, but we have some tough games coming up (e.g. Stormers in Cape Town, Chiefs in Hamilton, Reds in Brisbane). We need to win our home games

I have already voiced my dissatisfaction with Plum’s team selection and his snubbing of Jandre Marais for the ineffective Franco v/d Merwe, leaves a sour taste. Marais is now off to France – its poor player management.

Plum is not alone, Ludeke is struggling with the Bulls and Coetzee is missing the boat with the Stomers. Naka seems to have his house in order and so does the Kings coach given the little he has to work with.

Meyer Bosman impressed against a weak team, can he do the same with a strong team like the ‘Saders?

A little worrid about the back 3, JP has been quiet so far, Odwa hasn’t impressed either and Steyn is returning to a position he hasn’t played in for a while.

The simple and plainly obvious solution would be to drop Keegan,no one under 110kg can play in an international pack and for that matter drop Kanko coz he lacks pace. Quite frankly Id play Steyn at 10, because his vision and distribution is second to NO man. Not too mention he has ice in his veins and will always slot the pressure kicks.

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 112) : Yes without doubt, I had no issue with Hougaards form other than the odd charge down, but that had plenty to do with his forwards not protecting him. Hougaard’s natural attacking instincts were being supressed by Meyer’s out dated game plan.

Pienaar was poor on the EOYT. Hougaard is a rare talent who should be embraced and not discarded and wasted on the wing. Hougaard should by now be an established test star, not reduced to player questioning his abilities and reduced to a worthless wing. Poor player management by Meyer, much like discarding JJ Engelbrecht after a 10 min cameo off the bench for the Boks.
