Heyneke Meyer has named his first training squad for the year with the major talking point from a Sharks point is the inclusion of young lock Pieter-Steph du Toit. The young du Toit has certainly been in good form and thoroughly deserves his call-up.

Other Sharks players included are: Beast Mtawarira, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Franco van der Merwe, Marcell Coetzee, Willem Alberts, Ryan Kankowski, Pat Lambie, Frans Steyn, Lwazi Mvovo and JP Pietersen.

The camp will be three days, starting this coming Sunday after the Stormers vs. Sharks match and runs until Tuesday. This is the first of two planned training squads planned before the June internationals. Congratulations and the best of luck to all players involved.

The full squad is as follows:

Forwards: Tendai Mtawarira, Jannie du Plessis, Frans Malherbe, Coenie Oosthuizen, Pat Cilliers, Adriaan Strauss, Bismarck du Plessis, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Eben Etzebeth, Flip van der Merwe, Juandré Kruger, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Franco van der Merwe, Siya Kolisi, Marcell Coetzee, Willem Alberts, Arno Botha, Duane Vermeulen, Pierre Spies, Ryan Kankowski.

Backs: Jano Vermaak, Francois Hougaard, Pat Lambie, Morné Steyn, Elton Jantjies, Jean de Villiers, Frans Steyn, Juan de Jongh, Jan Serfontein, Robert Ebersohn, Bryan Habana, Lwazi Mvovo, Raymond Rhule, JP Pietersen, Bjorn Basson, Zane Kirchner.

  • A few more Sharks players I’d like to see but I’m not going to whine (much). Hopefully they’ll be in the next training camp.

Please no more Zane Kirchner. He is just terrible. :x

  • The faster we get to the world cup and get it over and done with the better as far as Im concerned :???:

Once again some strange picks. I wonder if Meyer can see that Cilliers and Malherbre cant scrum ,or that Juandre Kruger misses more tackles than Spies.

Some one tell me what the hell Bjorn Basson is doing there :x

  • Good to see Kanko in there.

    Pat Cilliers ??

It looks like Meyer will use Frans at fullback for the Boks too. I still prefer him at 12 to be honest.

  • I was not impressed with Meyer last year. Hell we had 3 of our S15 sides end up in the top 5 of the log and the best he could achieve with all that talent was a 67% win record.

Much of that poor record was down to poor team/squad selections and an out of touch game plan.

What is apparent with this first squad selection is that Meyer has not learnt from his mistakes and the message that he is sending to the players is that form counts for nothing, other than in the case of PSDT, Jan Serfontein and Ebersohn.

One has to ask what the hell the likes of Cilliers, Franco v/d Merwe, Juandre Kruger, Kankan, Spies, Vermaak, Morne, de Jongh, Basson and Kirchner are doing in that squad.

More importantly one needs to ask why on earth the likes of Willie le Roux, v/d Heever, JJ Engelbrecht, de Allende, Reinach, Groom, Herbst, Nkanyane, Kitshoff, Cooper, de Jager, Bresler, Daniel, Brussouw, Elstadt, Labascagne and Engelbrecht are not in the squad

  • @Saffex (Comment 6) : I agree ! His excuse will be that he’s worked with these players before and they know his structures.

The worrying thing is that he seems to think he is above the rest of the coaches in the country. I say this because he wants to see the rest of the teams play his shit game-plan and he selects players who’ve been moved to the bench ahead of starters.

  • @Saffex (Comment 6) : Good point – no Brussow. That one will come to bite Meyer hard. He has no real open sider in his squad – just the hybrid 7/8 players like Kolisi and Coetzee

I can’t take this guy seriously anymore, I liked him in his Bulls day, but he’s so out of depth now.

@Uli (Comment 22) : With Kirchner and Morne in the team you just have to wait for a kick and not worry about having much tackling to do.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 26) : He’s been good. More like how he used to play. Good ball carrying and tackling.

Just noticed that we have 4 inside centres and only one outside centre in de Jongh. Heyneke Meyer is not making use of the talent in this country!

  • @Pokkel (Comment 26) : I wish that we had Brendan Venter, Rassie and Nick Mallett involved. Heyneke’s trying to play Bulls rugby with the Boks.

Kick and chase won’t work anyore and we need to start offloading in the tackle and keeping the ball alive. A genuine fetcher (Brussouw) is a must.

  • @Saffex (Comment 32) : In truth, I have not watched that much rugby. But De Allende is family of my wife (albeit distantly) so I’ve kept a special eye on him, and to me he comes across as being as multi-faceted as a sheet of paper. Very good at certain aspects, certainly, but not enough of a complete package to challenge for a place in the Bok team

  • @Culling Song (Comment 33) : Well, he has displayed some good skills this year. Big strong lad who looks to beat his opposite number with a step or swerve, instead of taking on the predictable direct route.

In the last game he started for the Stormers, he had a great game at 12, breaking the line a few times, really looking the part. Sadly that was followed by the return of de Jongh to the starting line-up with de Allende being relegated to the bench, sadly. He looks like one of the better youngsters about and we need fresh blood at centre. Its time to move on from the likes of old man Jean.

You should have more faith in family bud and start watching the lad, it might help!

  • @ChrisS (Comment 18) : As much as I like seeing many new faces, that team would get hammered by the All Blacks and the Wallabies. It could do with a few more experienced players.

That being said, it would be nice to give those players a chance in the easier and less important June tests against Italy and Scotland to see how they cope
