Sharks scrumhalf Cobus Reinach has been rewarded for his good form over the last few weeks with a call-up to Heyneke Meyer’s first Springbok planning camp. starting in Cape Town this morning.

The 23-year-old scrumhalf, who won a Currie Cup Player of the Month award in his maiden campaign last season, has replaced Janno Vermaak in the group, with the Bulls man sustaining a grade 1 hamstring tear during his team’s weekend victory over the Cheetahs.

According to SA Rugby, coach Heyneke Meyer explained that Reinach “was the next scrumhalf on our list and has been very good for The Sharks this season. He’s still young and has a promising career ahead of him, so it would be good to get to know him better and also for him to see what our plans are for the season.”

Congrats to Cobus and here’s hoping he goes on to actually play for the Boks this year.

  • @Uli (Comment 2) :

He was probably the best player on the park this weekend. Lots of potential, so I am glad he is getting exposure to the bok setup.

  • Very happy for Kobus. I finally managed to watch my first Sharks game and he really impressed in an otherwise lacklustre team performance. Saying that… surely Sarel Pretorius should at least get a look-in too? Or is he injured?

  • Stoked for the man! Just not sure how I feel about Bok call ups from a Sharks perspective anymore. It seems like Heyneke is turning our best into Bulls.

Look at SR last year, how the guys played, and compare it to how they are playing now

    Marcell Coetzee
    Pat Lambie

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 7) : Lambie has really been terrible except for his goal kicking. HM has made him to a nothing by forcing him to play a MS game.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : Sarel is injured but should be back in two weeks. I don’t know if it is perhaps his age that keeps him out of the squad.

  • @Uli (Comment 8) : I dislike Meyer’s philosophies and game plans as much as the next guy, but blaming him for Lambie’s current form is a bit rich. The Sharks players have been back in the setup for almost 4 months now, and can hardly blame Bok coach influence in the way they play. If that was the case I would be really disappointed in the players and the Sharks coaching staff.

I do recall that the Sharks back line only really started to kick in on attack with Michalak at 10. Perhaps we need to realize that Lambie is still very much a work in progress. He still has the level head (although he lately does not seem to enjoy his rugby – hardly smiles on the field). He has improved tremendously on his kicking to poles, line kicks and tactical kicking in general. In my opinion he still needs work on getting his back line away under pressure. I was excited to hear the Sharks using Spencer as a back line consultant, but really disappointed when it came out he was hired to concentrate on kicking. I think Lambie would do well if he spends a lot of time with someone like Spencer.

Didn’t it seem like the team’s minds were somewhere else, and it seems to happen every time a bok training squad is announced
