Luke Watson will lead his Kings charges onto the Nelson Mandela Stadium pitch following his throat injury that ruled him out of the entire tour to the Antipodes.

Watson will wear the No 8 jersey while Cornell du Preez moves to the side of the scrum to make place for the captain. Devin Oosthuizen drops from the match 22 altogether. The only other changes to the team are in the second row where David Bulbring displaces Rynier Bernardo and in the front row, where Hannes Franklin and Bandise Maku swop places.

Ronnie Cooke and Sergeal Petersen have also swopped jerseys and will play on opposite sides of the field this week.

Kings: 15 George Whitehead, 14 Ronnie Cooke, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Sergeal Petersen, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 Luke Watson (capt), 7 Wimpie van der Walt, 6 Cornell du Preez, 5 David Bulbring, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Kevin Buys, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Schalk Ferreira Substitutes: 16 Hannes Franklin, 17 Grant Kemp, 18 Rynier Barnardo, 19 Jacques Engelbrecht, 20 Nicolas Vergallo, 21 Marcello Sampson, 22 Siviwe Soyizwapi.

  • The Kings have done superbly without the services of Luke, son of Wat. I think his leadership, ability on the ground and linking play will take them a few notches higher still.

I would be hesitant to break up that loose trio at this stage though. They seem to understand each other very well at the moment.

Fair enough. But they didn’t rush him back, so I think Solomons decision is s considered one.

Watson has played openside and 8th man before, so he is quite versatile. Perhaps more imporyantly, he has played on many big stages and will add more grounded belief amongst all the starry-eyed surprise.

Devin Oosthuizen has probably been the least impressive of the lot. Engelbrecht has to remain the impact player off the bench!

And as Mutley said…. We won the CC in 2011 and hosted the semi in 2012 as for the kings they could only win one VC so far and was not even in the CC….

Well acording to me that does not make them a better team than the LIONS….. We even kick their asses earlier this year with a couple of players missing…..

I am a Lions supporter (always will be), and as much as I would love to see our team back in the competition, if we are not able to be competitive, I don’t see the point.

Every year I start the season so optimistic about our chances and every year they let me down.

Maybe with a bit of luck, hopefully Jafta or Rasta to blow the whistle, it could be a huge upset hehehehe!

There has been very little negativity about the Kings all around – most commentators have been very positive about them based on how they have been playing.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 103) : I think you’ve nailed it. It may not be reflected in the media but I get the feeling that significant sections of the rugby viewing public still aren’t thrilled with the King’s inclusion. The Kings have three choices as far as I can tell: ignore it, get all butt-hurt about it or use as motivation.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 103) : I have even seen grudging praise on blogs from bloggers who used to be very against the idea.

Point is many teams have haters – just go spend time on Voldy to find some total nutcase Shark haters. The teams should ignore this and just get on with the business.

  • Be careful to take Luke’s comments out of context folks – he is right in the sense that everybody (or most outside of the region) hated their inclusion into Super Rugby at the expense of the Lions.

Personally, the comments are not off the mark, but the timing of publishing them and in the way it was done leaves a lot to be desired. And this from a company (HSM aka SA Rugby Magazine) that is supposed to look after his public profile…

    I would fire them personally.
